Adopted baby robin

While I was in the garden I noticed this robin begging for food. I watched and no adult robins ever showed up to feed it. It is kind of small. It was very hungry and trusting and I was able to give it a worm right away. I've been feeding it worms and berries for four days now. I brought it inside once and it did not like it. At dusk it looks up to the highest trees and finally takes off to spend the night in one of them. It returns every morning wanting to be fed. I started placing food in front of it and it takes the food by itself. It is also starting to look for things by itself. It seems stronger now but seems like it might have been the runt of the litter and maybe could not keep up with the family.

When I was six we rescued a baby robin! If it can fly it should be okay and should live. Hope you have a fun experience with your robin. Did you name it?

Hi, I haven't named it. I don't think I will. I'm already anxious to see if it is still around the following morning after it spends the night outside. I don't want to get to attached to it. The next couple of days are going to be real hot so I think it will need a little help.

Joann and Cliff, You maybe interested in this since you have small children around your new found friend. I was watching the "Dirty Jobs" TV show last night. Mike Rowe the dirty job guy, was accompanying a Wildlife Control operator, who was trapping all sorts of critters that had made their nests under the floors of people's homes. Along with Skunks and Raccoons, they also caught a couple of Opossums at one home and the professional trapper told Mike Rowe that Opossums (or Possums) were the "biggest carriers of HIV and *Tuberculosis". He also mentioned that the young ones were quite cute but warned Mike Rowe to be aware of the teeth on the adults, as they could rip you open in a jiffy. As soon as he came out with that information and warning I thought of you both and your grandchildren. Take care, "Horton" * I did a search and found the possums in New Zealand are infected with/carriers of Bovine Tuberculosis. Whether it has, in fact, entered North America and infected the native Opossums here, I could not really determine? Maybe you can do a more thorough search on the subject.

Leafwatcher, I looked at the HLibrary pictures and read the brief description for this hosta on MYHOSTAS.BE. It is a really nice little slow grower. After all, we don't need everything to get huge, now do we? I have a new Kiwi Highlights which is a sweet hosta too. It was a gift with an order from Land Of The Giants. A really NICE hosta. Hope you don't mind that I post MY Kiwi hosta here? New this year.

This is the second baby robin dead in our backyard . the first one was back a few years ago . There was a nest built on our patio chair which was very close to our window so we could watch clearly from inside. We almost didn't go outside to the backyard all summer cos we were scared to disturb the babies and parents robin ( except one time we dug some wombs and put them on the ground near the nest .. mummy robin picked all up and fed the babies . ) Luckily I didn't have many plants at all so it's ok not to water that summer one of the babies was born late so he's the smallest and weakest . He always couldn't get his food as the mummy fed most wombs to other stronger babies (that's why we decided to dig some wombs so every single one of them could get something ) . But still .. it didn't help much . We were right , all babies left the nest but this poor little guy died in there :(

The robin found a fallen fig I did not know about and couldn't stop eating it so they must have taste buds and a sweet beak. So I shared another one I had.

Wonderful videos! That baby seems to have adjusted well to having a parent with huge hands and a big glass eye. It will be hard for you when the baby finally realizes it's a bird and flies off. Although maybe it will stick around now that it's discovered fig trees...

Sorry to inform everyone that the robin died sometime last night. Yesterday morning I got up late and could not find the robin. I went around the neighborhood and then heard it across the street where some contractors doing work had fed it when it went up to them. I bought it back and decided to bring it inside since we are in the middle of a heatwave and it seemed weaker. It did not mind being in the container and it still ate everything I gave it. This morning I woke to find that it had died. The parents must have known it was sick and abondoned it. So sad, but it had another 9 days of life I guess. I have other videos but I'm not sure about posting them.

I'm so sorry, but you did give it some extra time and a quiet death without the stress of fearing predators while it was dying. I'd like to see some more videos.
