Will a bird sit on another bird's nest

I just saw the weirdest thing. I posted previously that I have a pair of waxwings nesting in our tree in our yard. I just looked out and saw a robin sitting on the nest. I got a terrible scare. I thought it would hurt the eggs. I ran outside and chased the robin off the nest. I then ran and grabbed my step ladder and mirror and climbed up to see what had happened to the eggs. Thankfully, they are okay and the mother returned shortly thereafter. Is this possible or could the robin just be "looking" at the nest? Robins have nested in that tree previously but they haven't tried this year. I don't know if the waxwings would be too welcoming if they did. But, boy that scared me. Thank goodness, robins aren't aggresive like the grackles I have around. Anybody ever see such a thing?
