Can anyone identify this SOUND?

Hi, first of all, I'm not even sure it was a bird and will try to xpost on the more general forum but this one seems to get more traffic! I am in northwest NJ in a suburb about a 1/2 mile from a state park. Around 3:30 am I was awakened by a sound I've never heard in my life. At first I thought maybe owl but it sounded almost like an exotic of some kind. It was quite loud. The best I can describe is...errRAAAAAAAA, errRAAAAAA ("a" sounding like RAT). It sounded almost forlorn, like it was calling for a mate or something. This went on for at least 15 minutes & I went back to bed. About 5 min later, I hear a crow, obviously distressed about something, cawing loudly. Mind you, it's 3:30 in the morning so I assume something disturbed its nest. Then all was quiet. It was the strangest sound I've ever heard. My guess is it was something that could climb that attacked the crow in its nest. Raccoon? Possum? I've never heard them "yell" so not sure. At first I thought it was just a tomcat but it really did not sound like a domestic cat--I've heard lots of them. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!
