House wren nest in my swingset pipe

I'm using the kids' old swingset in my garden, to grow cucs and beans up. In the middle part of the top, there is an opening where 2 pipes come together. There's a house wren nest in there! I can't believe there's enough room. But.....we've been having almost 100 degree heat here. Those babies must be dangerously hot in that hot metal pipe! I thought maybe the heat would kill them, but the parents are still taking food in there. What a bummer for them.

I think wrens will build a nest anywhere they can possibly fit into. Had one on a tractor where a gauge had been removed. And that tractor was being used. But ----- one year I had one of those decorative ceramic houses and sure as heck a wren built a nest in it. Sad to say the babies fried. Had to take them out with forceps. Please do not use these houses for birds. They are an oven and no circulation. Sorry for hi jacking your post!!

i remember something from an older post from several years ago about the lady who put up a beach umbrella to shade a nest in a pipe.

Donna, thanks for letting her finish with her babies. How big is the entrance hole, if it is a very small one (less than 1&1/2") it is a Wren of some sort. You can go to www.whatbird.com to get an ID. It's hard to tell how long she will take unless you have a good idea of what day they hatch. You will notice a lot more coming and going while she is feeding them. As they get older and are nearing time to leave you will really hear them chirping when Mom comes with food. They should not take longer than 14 days once they hatch (not really sure of Wren timetable). Are your screens removable? if they are it may be a good time to take them down for a good cleaning. I think it will be a challenge for the babies to find the hole, is there any other opening for them to get out? Mom will eventually guide them out but it would be much easier on them if there was a bigger traget.

Robin defending Carolina Wren nest????

I would not be surprised. Yesterday I witnessed something very similar-only the reverse. I have a mama robin in a nest near my front window. I was in the garden and I heard her peeping wildly. When I came around the corner, there were 5 blackbirds harassing her---getting close to her nest and posing a threat. I tried to shoo them away, but they ignored me and were too high up. Then I noticed about 4 other robins and a couple of wrens flying in and they chased the blackbirds off to a tree across the street. Mama robin settled back into her nest with her two babies. The other birds sat in her tree for a little while and then flew off. I was really impressed. Mother Nature is really heartwarming at times...so yes, your little robin could indeed be helping out a friend. :)

The wrens took over my bluebird house, HELP!

I discourage the wrens. I take any sticks they put into a box away as quickly as possible. From the information I've read on the Sialis website, if you let wrens nest, you will soon be overrun with wrens. The wrens will poke holes in the Bluebird's eggs, or toss out their chicks. So if you're trying to get Blues, I would certainly discourage the wrens.

Did House Wren take over Nuthatch nest?

Hi Konrad, Kinda sad to lose your RBNH nest... but this is nature at work I guess. Yes, we lost 1 bluebird egg to a HOWR 2 seasons ago. We saw him fly to and into the nest box, and come out with the pierced egg still impaled on his beak! We were waving our arms and shouting at him, as he dropped it on the ground and flew off. It all happened in 30 seconds or less. We discouraged him with a squirt gun for days and the parent blues dived bombed him mercilessly whenever he came near. He finally stopped coming around, and I'm happy to say the other 3 eggs hatched and fledged successfully. Hope your Nuthatches try again for you, Kenn Here is a link that might be useful: Latest Slideshow

Hmmmm.....its too high for a beach umbrella, but maybe I could bungee cord just a large umbrella onto it. I wonder if that would scare the parents off?? That's a good idea, if I can get it to work.

Big umbrella up now. Hopefully that will keep the little ones a little cooler. I stayed for a little while after I put it up, to be sure the parents were okay with it. One landed under it with a bug in its mouth for the kids, looked up at the umbrella like "what the heck is that???" and then went into the nest. YAY! Thanks for the tip!
