Steve Yes have camped in the snow and still do. The worst night spent in snow was back in 77 or 78. A friend and I decided to go to go for a hike one night. We ended up getting very cold and built a fire. Since the fire was warmer than walking we built leaf beds.. Not a normal leaf bed, We kicked leaves over top of some hot coals and laid down on them. When we got a hot spots we just got up and kicked more leaves to to cover them. By morning we had holes burnt in our clothes all over.. We still laugh about it when Winter hits. It is a wonder that we did not get frost bitten or worse. Growing up I have had to put my boots on hot coals or near a fire many mornings in order to thaw them enough to get on. For I loved to take just a sleeping bag go out and have to kick enough snow away to build a fire and make a spot large enough to sleep. We have not had much snow so far this year. But my last outting was on an ATV Nov 26, 27 and 28th. It was down to 19F on the night of the 27th. But It was comfortable. Had a warm fire, good tent along with a 20+ Mummy bag and another large 40+ Rectangle bag to wrap the mummy in. I do not know which tasted better. The roasted Polish sasuage or the home made veggie soup we had. Planning another trip in two weeks. Then an Ice fishing trip for trout the following weekend. Hopefully we will have some snow by then.

We reside at Lake Tahoe California where the winters can be very harsh. Snow camping you say?.. of course we do.. on hillsides of Echo and Angora Mountains, and various areas through Hope Valley. Can hardly wait for our next expedition.

One must really enjoy the great outdoors to endure the cold extremities. Dress warm with layering and staying dry is the key.

Wow, you guys are hardcore! We camped once when it got down into the teens and didn't enjoy it at all! Think I'll keep my camping in the March-October range :)

I'm going to make my first attempt at winter camping in Feb here in Minnesota. If I chicken out, there will be a warm RV waiting for me! Hey, baby steps, right? I think I've got everything I need. An extreme temps army sleeping bag and of course, plenty of layers. A big ol' campfire couldn't hurt, either.

We took our 20 ft. travel trailer one time for deer hunting in Pa. 4 guys. Slept toasty! Heater worked great, food good and hot! Weekend weather in high 60's!
BUT---rained during the night, then turned bitter, and door froze shut, with us in it!!
UH-OH!!!
Finally got door open, and found the snow coming down! Trailer was up on a mountain , on dirt road! With 2 wheel drive pickup to get it back down! Took all of my attention away from hunting! Made it down and home, decided to join a hunting camp next year! Did! And no winter camping!

Rusty, that's funny about you guys getting iced into the camper! No winter camping here for now! I think when my kids are older it sounds kind of nice--especially in snow. I just think that with having my kids still kind of young it sounds like too much work for them to have a good time! I wouldn't want to listen to complaining or have them fighting because they're stuck inside together too much in too close quarters!

I hunt the Adirondacks in NY. I use to go with other guys but the past five years I go by myself.The coldest I know its been was 11 degrees.One year we were in tree mile from the road. We hiked in with some patchy snow on the ground. 5 days later we were walking though nearly knee deep snow. I had just bought a new sleeping bag the night before we left, Thank god!. I was warm as toast.I've been in other snow while hunting but not as much. If you wish to try this cold camping remember to put the eggs on the fire a few seconds so you can get the shell off the frozen egg.The worst part is getting up in the morning and having to get out of your bag, bend and get your boots on while having to pee

Haven't camped in the snow yet, but plan to try it once we sell our house and move back up to the northern part of Oregon.

Right now, I'll hike in winter and enter the snow zone - a 50/50 green & snow hike.

Do like cooking a small take-along meal though. Either bring water or melt snow.

Getting snowed on when we hit the Sierras for the deer/bear hunt happens some years, but it's not the wet snows you encounter back east, and the drier air doesn't create more problems like moister climates.
