I love them, Dave. She has such subtle beauty, a quiet dignity. You've captured her spirit beautifully, as always. Thank you.

As an update to the possible Z. violacea x Z. haageana cross, I've found another plant in my growout that is very similar to the first one. It also has yellow flowers that are not completely normal. The terminal bud in the first plant has opened revealing a flower that is closer to normal than the first side flower, but still not quite right. The second plant also opened its first flower today and it is just a bit darker yellow with petals of unusual shape and at this point looks to not be fertile. I still am not sure what I have here as the buds and flowers very much favor the Persian Carpet type, but the leaves on these plants are definitely larger and wider (32mm wide) than any Persian Carpet (19mm wide) volunteers I have growing. One reason I think they may be hybrids is the uniformity of flower color.....as I don't know that I have ever had two Persian Carpet/Old Mexico plants with the same uniform color growing at the same time! One other possibility is that they both are volunteer Persian Carpets from the same plant, just happening to be growing in my rows, far removed from where I grew Persian Carpets last year. Hopefully one flower will develop fertility, however, if the original pollen source was Persian Carpet and the seed parent a State Fair, these plants would be triploid and probably not fertile. I did have the tetraploid Old Mexico growing later in the season.... which would have a better chance at producing a fertile plant if it was the pollen source. Arlan

Fruit Tree: Female, Male, or unisex?

You should check Walter Reeves website. He's our regional garden person on 750 am in Atlanta. His site links to UGA extension service. My understanding is that cherries and plums are not recommended in Georgia. And the local nurseries like Johnson Brothers in Elijay spell out which ones do the best in the humid south. With the internet you can buy anything, but it doesn't mean it will grow here. And the the home depot and lowes are consistently selling fruit trees that are not recommended for our area. I'll throw in a plug for rabbiteye blueberries (more than one varieity rec),figs(self fertile), muscadine grapes(I don't fully understand) and persimmons(seperate male and female - but I have two female and they are being fertilized by a wild tree somewhere). These plants are indestructable in our area. Apples and pears work, you typically need two different plants and you have to study up on the variety for Georgia because of disease and insect pressure.

I find the stems of this plant to be extremely brittle and prone to breakage, you can almost snap a branch off just by lightly brushing against it. The weight of the snow did some damage the first year I had it, last year we made one of those /\ shaped things and covered it, that helped. Other than it being a bit delicate, it's a great plant, very attractive. I have ilex glabra compacta. PS: some birds/animals prefer berries after they've turned soft and old, often the next season when they're still hanging there and you think nothing is interested in them. I've seen this to be true with cedar waxwings + highbush cranberry, and chipmunks + ilex.

Thanks Jim.....since it was so darned cold and we had no specific plans except to entertain the grandkids it was a perfect opportunity to sit on my keester and look at the birds. We do get a pretty good mix of backyard birds...and this was really quite fun. I had never taken an entire day to record all the different backyard birds and I was really impressed with the variety...some times the very things we see each day are not noticed because of the familiarity...but, I did enjoy this and plan to do it again. Its nice when my husband and I can get some time off work and travel to Audubon Park, or the wildlife refuge to take a look at the birds...but, sometimes its amazing what you can see in your own backyard....thanks again Jim... ~Kathy~

Thanks Dave - I agree with Kathy - subtle and beautiful.... she has quite a little personality that shines through... I love the one where she is lifting one foot as if the deck were cold!

I had 3 males drinking warm water from my birdbath this morning and wished you were here with your camera to capture the moment for me! They were all fluffed out (it was 18 degrees here in Ga which is unusual)...I think they were my first fledglings from last spring - only 3 eggs hatched and they were all little boys....

Thanks again for sharing this beautiful girl with us!

Thanks Dave. You have no idea how much I (we) appreciate your photos. She's a beauty.
We lost our elderly Mama Girl in September, and we miss her terribly. The young girls are still around, and they seem to be entertaining a few young boys, but Dad still rules the roost. Here's hoping he finds a new Mama for next season.

Dave, I would very much like to use one of your images (not sure which one yet) to display on the front page of the upcoming edition of the Maryland Bluebird Society's newsletter. I promise to give you credit if you will give me permission.
Thanks,
Kathy

So much detail, Dave. Beautiful. Looks like she's letting a bit of her floozy out on the 3rd one! My blues are beginning to think spring. Had one male on a nestbox early yesterday morning singing his little heart out! It's wonderful to see the sun and warmer temps on the same day!
By the way, I think the new camera is gonna work out just fine!

WOW Dave. Everytime I see your photographs, that is all I can think of. WOW. These are truly AWESOME shots of my most favorite songbird. I adore them, and the little females are so beautiful and special. Is she losing brood patch feathers? Can almost see a brood patch in the 3rd shot. I imagine that is a hormonally based process, and I'd think that now would be the time that it would happen. So cool!!!! Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful photos. They really make me happy!! :O)
