I think it's a native azalea hybrid called 'Hotspur Yellow', Tom. I planted it a while back, but it didn't bloom at first, I think because it was in too shady a spot. After the hurricane, the fallen trees opened up that area to more sun, and it started blooming. Most of the deciduous azaleas I planted are strictly the species, like r. canescens, r. austrinum, etc., but I think this one is a hybrid of one of our southeastern natives and something else. You can't believe how good my woods are smelling right now! By the way, this female spicebush swallowtail was a big gal, as big as the male tiger - maybe that's why he thought she was a tiger! Sherry

I find the stems of this plant to be extremely brittle and prone to breakage, you can almost snap a branch off just by lightly brushing against it. The weight of the snow did some damage the first year I had it, last year we made one of those /\ shaped things and covered it, that helped. Other than it being a bit delicate, it's a great plant, very attractive. I have ilex glabra compacta. PS: some birds/animals prefer berries after they've turned soft and old, often the next season when they're still hanging there and you think nothing is interested in them. I've seen this to be true with cedar waxwings + highbush cranberry, and chipmunks + ilex.

Thanks Jim.....since it was so darned cold and we had no specific plans except to entertain the grandkids it was a perfect opportunity to sit on my keester and look at the birds. We do get a pretty good mix of backyard birds...and this was really quite fun. I had never taken an entire day to record all the different backyard birds and I was really impressed with the variety...some times the very things we see each day are not noticed because of the familiarity...but, I did enjoy this and plan to do it again. Its nice when my husband and I can get some time off work and travel to Audubon Park, or the wildlife refuge to take a look at the birds...but, sometimes its amazing what you can see in your own backyard....thanks again Jim... ~Kathy~

Yes Mazer, thank you for posting this. I would like to think I know more than a little bit about this subject, and for me, it's very well put. But for someone with a 4 month old pee and poop factory, not to mention chewing, running all over the house, cooking, kids, running around, etc. etc. it is probably going to be to much to take in. All the person with the peeing, pooping puppy wants is to fix things and have a pleasant experience with their dog. The very bottom line I see in this, is: Relationship with your dog = success. If you don't have a positive relationship AND assert your authority, you have problems in all potty areas. I can't tell you how many people I have encountered who: #1. Don't research the subject before they get started and just dont know what they are getting themselves in to. #2. Think they know how to deal with it, but just don't. #3. Proceed to quickly, expecting way to much from their dog to fast, thereby confusing the dog and making things worse. #4. Are not successful, get frustrated, don't know what to do, and the dog winds up back at a pound or worse. #5. Fail to realize from the very beginning, that the training and work that goes into it, is temporary. All of these are very important things to consider, unfortunately, lots of people don't. Making the potty correction properly also helps with other negative behaviors, instills confidence in the dog (and human) and should eventually lead to the dogs unsupervised freedom, assuming chewing and teething are under control. Potty issues can be difficult to correct. Enter a medical issue such as a UTI, and if it's not recognized, the experience can be absolute hell. Ask me, I should know and I had all of the experience, and a wonderful vet completely on top of the situation. *I spent 6 months getting the job done. (long story, dog was 4 months and traumatized before I came along). The key is to be able to target what is not going well, including medical issues, backing up and starting over, and proceed, making corrections along the way, in a way that is not to much for the dog or human doing the training. Thanks Dave - I agree with Kathy - subtle and beautiful.... she has quite a little personality that shines through... I love the one where she is lifting one foot as if the deck were cold!

I had 3 males drinking warm water from my birdbath this morning and wished you were here with your camera to capture the moment for me! They were all fluffed out (it was 18 degrees here in Ga which is unusual)...I think they were my first fledglings from last spring - only 3 eggs hatched and they were all little boys....

Thanks again for sharing this beautiful girl with us!

We lost our elderly Mama Girl in September, and we miss her terribly. The young girls are still around, and they seem to be entertaining a few young boys, but Dad still rules the roost. Here's hoping he finds a new Mama for next season.

So much detail, Dave. Beautiful. Looks like she's letting a bit of her floozy out on the 3rd one! My blues are beginning to think spring. Had one male on a nestbox early yesterday morning singing his little heart out! It's wonderful to see the sun and warmer temps on the same day!
By the way, I think the new camera is gonna work out just fine!

WOW Dave. Everytime I see your photographs, that is all I can think of. WOW. These are truly AWESOME shots of my most favorite songbird. I adore them, and the little females are so beautiful and special. Is she losing brood patch feathers? Can almost see a brood patch in the 3rd shot. I imagine that is a hormonally based process, and I'd think that now would be the time that it would happen. So cool!!!! Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful photos. They really make me happy!! :O)
