In an attempt to distract the squirrel, I installed a bungee squirrel feeder, but of course the annoying squirrels ignore the corn unless it is within easy reach.

I bought squirrel/raccoon baffles at Wild Birds about 4 years ago. They are stovepipe style, guess that's the same as "torpedo"? The difference between squirrel/raccoon and just a squirrel baffle is that they are longer - 2 feet instead of 1 foot (explained to me by a WBU employee). They're black metal and hang on a piece of hardware attached to the feeder poles. I installed them on the poles about 4 1/2 feet high. They definitely work to keep the raccoons, squirrels and other critters off the feeders. Occasionally I go out and one of the poles seems to be listing a little bit to the side, so I presume a raccoon has climbed the pole and tried to get past the baffle, but no luck! Haha. When you say torpedo style baffle, is that like a stovepipe baffle? If so, how long is it, and how high is it mounted? I have a three foot section of stovepipe which is mounted directly under the feeder at about 4 1/2 feet. I have never had a squirrel get past that baffle, and many have tried. A four foot tall baffle works even better, but I'm too short to reach the feeder if I mount the feeder any higher. Your idea of cleaning it and waxing it is a good one. But just make sure it's mounted high enough that they can't jump over it, or jump enough to reach the top and grab on.

I managed to use a bowl type baffle on a pole (not a shepherd's hook). You just need to keep it high enough so that the squirrels can't jump up on it. I reinforce the center with some metal after I find squirrels trying to chew through the middle. For shepherd's hook, I have seen a metal cone that's opened on the side so you can insert it and wrap it around a pole. The problem is that they also need to be place high enough so that squirrels can't jump on it, so if your hook is short then it won't work. Another simple idea would be to use a upside down plastic bucket. You can probably cut out the side so you can insert it. The bucket would too wide for the squirrel to get their paws around. Paul
