Donna (dzyg).....? about nyworms

Hi Donna....I've made my 2nd order with nyworms.....took 4 days for my 1st....they shipped my 2nd order on Mon. 10/06....still no worms today....i dont think it should take it this long being shipped priority....i emailed them yesterday...no reply....was wondering if you knew of a phone # as i cant seem to find one on their site.....Thanks.......Bren

Yikes, I hope you got them! The first time I ordered from them it took 4 days but every time after that it only took 2 days. Not sure of a phone number, is there any listed on their site?? I haven't ordered in a bit as I had enough, now I have run out but won't order anymore as the Blues may have left, not sure on that yet. I have just been putting out waxworms that I get at our local Walmart. I'd rather not be stuck with a bunch of worms over Winter if I can help it. My BLues don't over winter here.

Donna..thanks for your reply....no...i havent received my order yet but i finally got a reply to my email from them...they said they would ship another order if that one doesn't come in by tomorrow (mon)....geeeez....long time...i have clicked on everything on their site and havent found a phone #....i didnt know walmart sold wax worms....live ones?....or maybe all walmarts dont have them...what section are they in?....going there tomorrow so i'll look for those while i'm there....i'm hoping that since my blues are still here that they are staying....sorry yours dont stay with you....but now i'm having trouble with a mocking bird chasing them away...seems like he stays perched waiting on them when he hears them coming...i've chased him away countless times...does everyone have this problem?....thanks again for your reply !!!!............Bren

LEXAROSE,I said baffles are better in my first post, I just can't put them over a post that has 5 strands of barb-wire attatched to it. I use the METAL posts in the fence line to mount the houses on not the wooden ones!I did (in my opinion) improve my setup by putting up 7 new boxes this year, I think that is trying to help the birds. In my opinion you are creating a natural cavity when you put up a nest box, look at all the different kinds of birds that nest on the ground, in trees, in low bushes they do this without guards and I am sure some fall victim to predation but a percentage of them still survive to carry on the species this is called Nature and sometimes Nature is not fair or so some of us don't think so anyway. IMO nestboxes are better than natural cavities, if they weren't why would birds use them instead of searching out natural cavities? I thought this forum was for opinions and discussion, and I didn't know anyone was the JUDGE and JURY that had the final say on what is right and what is wrong. If I didn't care about the birds why would you think I would go to all the trouble to put up nest boxes in the first place? I am 62 years old and have been doing this for the last 15 years, I know I have done some good although in your opinion what I am doing is INEXCUSABLE,I do respect your opinion though. One thing I have learned thru the years is to take the words NEVER and ALWAYS out of my vocabulary, because very few things are NEVER and ALWAYS right or wrong. I will not be posting about this again so you can tear me apart, but to all you people out there that have taken the time to put up nest boxes with or without guards, the birds thank you and I thank you. I would wait until tomorrow and see if she lays another egg. She can do it alone but during incubation they do rely on the male to feed them. If she continues laying eggs then I would get some live mealworms and train her to come to a dish of them. To do this you need to know where she perches alot and set the dish (white or clear work well) where she can look down on it from her perch. Once she sees movement in the dish she will drop down and see what they are and eat them. Once she knows there is food in that dish you can move it into a feeder (to prevent other birds from eating them) or to where ever is a safer place to feed her. You can also feed waxworms and crickets (with their hing legs removed so they cannot jump). She may abandon but it is hard to tell for sure. Let us know how it goes and what you observe. I live in SE Tennessee, Bradley County, We have had a lot of Towhees in and around the yard over the years but havent seen any lately. I attribute it to the last wooded lots around here being bulldozed for houses. Back in 1990 I saw my only Western Towhee in a Holly tree in my parent's front yard. Spots were very distinct and I was able to approach within about 8 feet. A couple of weeks Ago I was at my Dentist's office getting a cleaning when I saw one land on the wall of the enclosed garden just outside the window. This is about 150 feet from an area of about 6 or seven acres that is heavily wooded and right in the middle of a very settled area including a hospital and large medical building. The owner of this area is my daughter's Great Grandmother-in-law. She is in her late 80s and says she is saving the land as an investment for her old age.

I've been consumed w/ getting ready for new carpet (done yesterday!) and am now back. My cleaned-out box is still open until I can safeguard it. Dzyg, I hear what you're saying about the racoons. I had lots when I lived on Cape Cod and in CO; but I'm out a lot at night here and I've never seen a single one - which has surprised me. Also, I went back and looked at the nest and realized it *is* somewhat flattened; what's deceiving is that the egg has gotten pushed down under part of the nesting material which makes it appear deep. Lisa 11310, I did monitor the previous nest. I was initially checking it every 2-3 days, but then I read somewhere that you should only do it once weekly. I didn't check it after day 12 b/c of the danger of causing the chicks to fledge prematurely. Then I waited 9 more days b/c sialis says it can take up to 21 days. Should I have done differently? I've read and studied the info on sialis re predator guards, trying to decide my best course of action. Altho the tack strips would probably work, I agree w/ the person who said they're inhumane. I'd really like to keep the wooden posts if possible; it says the stovepipe baffle works on them. I can get 10" x 2' ducting, is there any reason that wouldn't be effective? Does it make a difference whether what's above the baffle is a wooden post or a metal pole or conduit? I know squirrels can jump quite a distance; could they jump over / around the baffle to the box which is mounted so the entrance hole is at 5'? I've checked the open box for ants and haven't seen any more since putting the vaseline on the post.

Have you thought of trying dreid meal worms?I tried it last winter in OH.Some of my Blues strted eating it when I spinkled it on the suet.Some of my frineds who live in OH and MI say that their Blues get used to it with suet.One of them sprays olive oil on the dried mealworms and serves them.
If you are interested in trying it you can order them from

Last spring when I ran out of live mealworms, I purchased dried ones from a local feed store...the blues ate them, but no doubt they prefer the live ones. Shortly after I began feeding mealworms, a CROW who was feeding babies discovered the mealies and scoffed them up before the blues could get even a little bite! A mockingbird found them too, but the crow always won out...it was a constant battle until someone suggested I order a mealworm feeder. It really solved the problem as larger birds can't get to the dish. Mine came from the Bluebird Nut Cafe (I think!).

Our local Petco store has waxworms and mealworms but the quality is very poor. Hope you can find the worms at Walmart...our Walmart stores don't carry them.

Never thought to add the dried ones to suet..I might try that!

Our Walmart carries the waxworms in the sporting goods area, they also have nightcrawlers. They are sold for fishing bait. Ours come in tubs of 36, sometimes they run small but usually there are more than 36 in there if they are smaller. You have to open them and inspect them though as sometimes a container will have lots of dead ones in it.

My Blues don't eat suet so I doubt if sprinkling dried mealworms in suet would work. They may eat dried mealworms though wish I could find some locally, maybe I will call around. Would rather by a small amount first to see if they like them. Especially too since they could leave any day now.
