I've been fortunate enough to have a pair of mockingbirds in my backyard year around for several years. They are very protective of their territory, especially to other mockingbirds. Every year, they raise two or three offspring, but run them off soon after they fledge. The only other birds they seem to tolerate are a pair of white wing doves that nest in a youpon holly tree. Maybe because the doves don't compete for the same food source. They go nuts in the spring when the flocks of Cedar Waxwings come through and strip off the remaining winter youpon holly berries, which is the mockingbirds main food source in winter. They are overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of Waxwings, but just complain loudly. The most interesting thing is they mate for life, but go through a re-bonding ritual every spring. They face each other on the ground about 2 feet apart, and the male will hop forward and place a youpon berry on the ground, then hop back. The female then hops forward, picks up the berry and hops back. They do this several times a day until they finally go off and build a new nest and lay eggs.

They take about 19 days to fledge from egg hatching onwards; you may want to try and figure out approximately how long the parents have been feeding them and that should give you an idea of how many days more to go. Pretty soon you should start to see some action

They are no different in Europe than anywhere else. It is true in the animal world it is hard to find a species that's completely innocent. Bluebirds will also kill and take over a nest if they have too. Barn swallows can do the same. I can give you a link with a story about swallows sealing a nest that a sparrow took over, and they sealed it with a sparrow inside (but the link is not in English). Swifts in Europe often take over a nest by killing the birds with its claws. The american cowbird is an angel compared to the European cuckoo bird :) I could continue with these kind of stories forever. Any way, I don't have a problem with your or anybody else's advise, but you should list all the possible solutions, not just YOUR favorite.

I have barn swallow nest under my balcony, which of course just has to be where my back door is. They have already had a baby, which they were aggressive towards us when we would walk out the door, but only as we passed it. The baby has flown away. We thought we were in the clear. But it appears THEY HAVE ANOTHER EGG. I Went out to get into my pool today and BOTH of them were extremely aggressive. They were both coming at me at the same time, flying at my head and circling around to come back. Mind you, my pool is more than a few feet away. With the other egg, as long as we walked past, they would fly past as if to Warn us, but then leave us alone. This time seems to be different. They followed me. I have 3 kids that I cannot allow in my back yard because of this. I am at a loss . I can not keep 3 kids locked in my house for a few weeks. There is no baby yet that I can see.
