Questions concering Carolina Wrens

We have a nest on our back deck with newly hatched Carolina Wrens. My whole family enjoys watching mama and daddy bird come and feed the three babys, but have witnessed some odd behaviour. I've been searching the internet all morning, but can't find any answers to my questions, so I thought I might try here. First, the parents are feeding the birds whole insects and worms, I thought that all birds reguritated their feedings into the

baby's mouths? The babies aren't that old, I'd guess to say a couple of days to a week. And the other thing is that we have witnessed four times one of the parents remove a white thing from the nest. They'll poke their heads in and feed the babies, but every now and again they'll remove this white object that appears to be about an inch long and oblong.

Just curious if anyone has any idea about either of these things..

Thanks y'all!!
