bluebird egg not hatching

The bluebird next has 4 eggs and they have been there about a month. At first the nest was normal size but then the female started adding material to the nest so not it is very tall in the box. The male and female birds are in and out of the nest every day. This AM the male took some pinestraw out of the box. Flew to a perch and then took the material back into the box. I week or so ago I read somewhere that at this point I should remove the nest and the eggs but that just breaks my heart and I am not sure if this is what I should do.

Can someone please advise me what to do at this point. I have been checking the nest daily and there is no change.

Just leav the nest and wait patiently. If the babies don't make it just remove the nest in winter when the bluebirds are gone. Cross your fingers and hope for the best!

It would be highly unusual for the eggs to hatch after a month. She is probably building a new nest over the old one and will more than likely re-lay. Can you take one of the eggs out and candle it? (shine a bright flashlight through it to see if there is anything in there). More than likely the eggs are infertile. If they are indeed infertile, I would remove the infertile eggs or else mark them in case she re-lays. Then you will be able to tell the old from the new and know which ones need removing. Sometimes the birds will remove the eggs themselves, but if they don't, you may need to help them out.

Karen - Seems your female is a bit ahead of schedule... But I would hope you still have a good chance for hatchlings if she's incubating and staying in the box a lot. I suspect she knows she has to keep those eggs warm, and will try to. Connie - Sorry I know next to nothing about ducks. I would worry too if they're not incubating yet. Our Missy Blue has been incubating 5 blue eggs day and night for the past 10days. She spends most of her time on the nest, with just short breaks during the day. Her Mr.B is feeding her thru the hole like a champ. It's also a good bit warmer here I'm sure, altho we've approached freezing two nights since the last egg was laid. The boxes were paired about 10 feet apart,they each began building nest and the both began laying eggs ,Then All of the sudden,The TRES decided they wanted the other box.They moved in and began laying more eggs with the Wren eggs,even carefully adding nesting material under the the Wren eggs.I noticed the Wren was going in the other box where the TRES used to be.I thought for sure they would throw out the TRES eggs and rebuild another nest,But they didn't,she began incubating the TRES eggs.The start of incubation was a week apart,so I couldn't just switch everything.I was surprised some of the eggs hatched.I did contact a rehaber as soon as I noticed what was going on.Since TRES feed in the air,there was no way each Species would have survived once fledging.Here is the surviving TRES from the video,He/She was pulled from the nest just before it was due to fledge.It was released a few weeks later by the rehaber.

Amazing! I never gave much thought to the hatching process..that the Mom stands guard the whole time and keeps everything moving. I knew they ate the shells - partly for calcium I think, but had no idea about the "gentle pecking". Kind of like when they rub babies in the hospital I guess. Gets them moving and breathing. We are definitely going to install cameras next year! I know I'll never be able to match the camera work of some of you but it must be magical to watch all of these things take place. They are all usually laid at different times. The ones that didn't hatch were probably laid a few days after the others. have any more hatched? i have 5 baby blue birds right now.
