I took this picture with a small digital camera

see the blue in it's tail

when it flies it is almost entirely blue

Looks like you have a little male Blue Bird baby there. Were there any known nests around?

OOPPSS sorry I didn't see your first post. Looks like an Eastern to me but then I have never seen a Mountan fledgeling so I retract my 1st response. LOL Hey it's a baby Blue! It's all good!

It's really hard to tell from the picture but I think the first one is a house finch. They also have a notch just not as deep. Purple finches (males) have a raspberry colored wash all along the back of their necks and wings that HF's don't have. HF are not native to this area but have spread all over the US due to being kept as pets in the past and are very common. In Central Illinois- usually only see a few towhees the whole summer and have never seen them in the winter. There must have been a small flock of them that spent their days under the feeders in the yard this past weekend. Really enjoying all the photos.

The hawk in Menifee, CA can only be a Cooper's Hawk but it is an oddly-colored one. Something going on with the feathers, such as a heavy molt or missing feathers for some other reason. If you have other photos please post.

Yep it is a male Bluebird fledgling. I don't know what Mountain Bluebird fledglings look like but this one looks how the Eastern Bluebird fledgling look.

I agree with Lisa.It looks like a male Eastern Bluebird fledgeling.I am now in CA. I have seen both the Mountain and the Eastern Blues.

You can put up nestboxes any time of year. If bluebirds are resident in your area year round, they are always checking out potential nest sites. If they are not winter residents, the box will be ready when they arrive.
We put up a nextbox on Valentine's Day 10 years ago; a pair of bluebirds checked it out within 15 minutes, and we've had bluebirds ever since.
