Finch Nest

I have a hanging basket that has a house finch nest in it which has 3 babies less than a week old in it. We are expecting big storms with strong winds tonight and I'm afraid the basket will blow down. Would it be OK to take the basket down and set in on the ground right below where it's hanging? Will the mother find it there or should I just take my chances and hope it doesn't get blown down?

The danger is what else would find the basket on the ground. Cats, raccoons, squirrels.... I would take my chances and leave it hanging. Is there any way you can reinforce the hanger so it's more secure?

Thanks! The predator angle never even occurred to me, just worried about weather. I will secure the basket to the hanger with nylon cable ties and hope for the best!

The only thing I can think of is to enclose it in chicken wire, I'm sure the finches could get through but not cats or squirrels or even Jays &Crows. I know not very pretty but you of all people could live with for a couple weeks! Wonder if Mom would accept it?

The female House Finches incubate the eggs-maybe she died and the male is trying to fill in? In any case, this introduced species (they're from the West) is tough enough to evict House Sparrows, so House Finches are in no danger and considered pests by many. Still they are pretty and endear themselves to some because they like to nest very close to people.

I KNOW I would get rid of them immediately. Without a doubt. I've seen enough of warblers and others caring for these monsters while their babies die of starvation and neglect.
