Oh my but we have had drama here today! Our last bluebird nesting here at the house had 2 nestlings (3rd egg did not hatch), one of which fledged sometime late Thursday or early yesterday. When I checked the nest last night I thought the box was empty, but upon closer inspection, there was the sweetest little girl all hunkered down, so I quickly closed the box and left. This morning, there she was, sitting in the grass just a few feet from the nestbox but she couldn't seem to get any lift. Mama and Papa were both nearby, calling to her, and after some inspections on my part, it was obvious she wasn't flying anywhere today. I think all parties were relieved when I put her back inside the nest. We've seen both parents visiting the box to feed her and she's done some leaning, but hasn't tried to come out again. I've got a hole reducer ready to install and will probably put it on later this evening so that she doesn't try anything overnight. According to my records she's only a day behind her sibling, so I'm hoping she will be able to take flight tomorrow.

Gosh Kathy...if this had to happen, I'm relieved it was you and not me! I doubt I would have thought to put her back in the box, but you seem to know all the right things to do! I'm sure her parents are thanking you and I'm sure she'll safely join her family when she does take flight.

Well, she's been peeking all afternoon, calling out that sweet little note to see if her family is still nearby. They are. We are going out for awhile this evening and I decided to put the reducer on--never had to do this before as nestings to this point have all had eggs hatch relatively close together. I'm going on faith (and the experiences of those of you who HAVE done this) that the parents will continue to feed her. I'm taking the reducer off in the morning and will keep an eye on things to see how the day goes.

You're more than welcome and we'd love to have you back any time. There's a new nursery here that I want to check out this week. It might be a good place to meet sometime. I'll post what I learn about it. We missed Nelson and a few others, and those who didn't make it to lunch missed a real treat. I left for Nashville right after lunch to help my daughter finish moving and get settled in her new apartment, so I haven't even started planting all the goodies. At least they're all still alive and I can't wait to dig in! ;-)

LOL, Kylie!!! Bob, since your plants are actively growing in Florida at this time of year, Sure, go ahead and up pot the ones rooting into the ground. You can give them regular fertilizer now, too. Wait a little longer on the more recent cuttings but sure, give them some fertilizer too, just not as strong. Your season is just the opposite of most of ours, except for our California members. This is your season for blossoms- when it finally cools off in your area! Aren't your neighbor's Frosty Pink blooming right now? And yes, you can leave them in pots year round. That way, if a frost threatens like happened last winter down your way, you can drag them into the garage! I nestle my big potted brugs into my shrubs and perrennials- the plant is is the sun and the pots are shaded, so they do not get as hot. And tell you wife, congrats!! She will enjoy the blossoms as much as you!!

I second the Panicum and Schizachyrium, but even thinking of varieties like Miscanthus "Rotsilber", Miscanthus "Flamingo", Misc. "Grazielle", Misc. "Ferner Osten", Sorghastrum nutans "Sioux Blue" ( yellows, marbled orange, and tans), Eragrostis trichodes ( soft pink airy panicles, red, orange, and yellow fall color),lower varieties like Eragrostis spectabilis (great lower grass with bright purple flowers and fall color), Holcus lanatus, Boetuloua gracilis( red tinge to the stalks and then fades) and varieties of Panicum like Dallas Blues, Cloud Nine, Heavy Metal, Rostralbusch, and Shenandoah. And don't forget the other great cultivar of Schizachyrium. Most people forget about "Blaze", which has better fall color than "The Blues". "The Blues" is a great plant for the blue growth and magenta highlights on the seed stalks, but if you want a plant that is on fire, try "Blaze" if you can find it. Oh ya, don't forget your Carex family for borders, filling, and add textures.

Thanks for all of the nice encouragement. There are several areas of the kitchen which I feel pretty strongly about, and then there are the ones I am uneasy about. I think the Marcolo / rhome concern of too many steps for something as simple as a bowl of cereal is certainly worth considering, and I am going to work to tighten up those functions which are common for us. I have one of those little "planning desks" in my current kitchen and at any given time it is piled with papers, bills, kids pemission slips, and mail. If I have somebody coming over, I quickly dump it all into a basket which quickly becomes a black hole! My little room behind the cooktop (Rachel's space) is to allow my mess, keep it close by, but keep it out of the kitchen area. I know this little space will be a favorite, and it is really there only to handle a roofline issue. The home planning area, is where I was thinking the kids could do homework --- they would be close by, but not in the loud main room --- I knew it would be darkish, and would have no windows, but that is a bit by design as the computer will not have a glare and the printer and all of that stuff can be tucked away in here. The butler's pantry will likely house the more formal china, and it is where guests can help themselves to wine, beer, drinks and a food buffet, though I think it will mainly function as a bar during parties, and food will likely be on the island. My thinking is the butler's pantry is a good connector to the dining room, and the great room, kitchen and porch. The corridor is wide enough for some milling around, and there will be a sink in there, but the related clean-up area will really be on the island. I'm OK with that. One of the other things that you've all made me consider, is the steps to do things like get cereal. What if the 2 cabinets flanking the kitchen table have a fridge and freezer drawer, coffee maker, mugs, sugar bowl, glasses and bowls on one side. On the other side, what if they have 2 big drawers (size of fridge drawers) filled with the cereal boxes. Silverware is another issue. Would it make sense to keep the daily silverware over by the table? If so, couldn't I just take the silverware basket out of the dishwasher and take it (or have the kids take it) over to that area to empty. In that case, a daily meal (cereal and coffee, and juice) would all be handled right there at the table. Clean-up would involve setting the dishes through the little pass through (I could make this a door, but I think I like the pass-through) and then loading the dishwasher, etc. Not too bad, it only involves the breakfast and clean-up area. Now, things are more complicated for other meals. Setting the table would mean getting plates, etc. out of the "dish pantry" area. In my little baking area, I think the comments are totally on --- I think I need to put uppers here for baking supplies. That would allow me to put drawers below for things like mixing bowls, pans, mixers, etc. The toaster could also go out here as well. I know I have lots lots more to figure out --- but thanks for all of the help thus far. Marcolo, thanks so much for the design and reclaimed wood, etc. encouragement. I have always loved these things and sometimes people look at me like I'm crazy, but I really love them. Good to know that I'm actually going to be current for a little while at least!

This is an update I'd rather not have to give. That sweet little girl was found dead in the nest this morning. I know the parents were visiting the box after the reducer went on, so she didn't starve or die of thirst--I can only assume it was the stress of not being able to go up and sit in the hole like she'd been doing. I'm honestly sickened by this and am wondering if I did the right thing by interfering in the first place. I probably should have put her back in the box and just let nature take its course. I know there are several of you who have used a reducer successfully . . . it just didn't work for my little one.

Kathy...I am so very sorry this little one didn't make it. We all were hoping for a better ending to this situation. I know nothing of hole reducers, so I can't speak to that...anyway, you have always been so compassionate and understanding with many others who might question their actions, so let me be the first to offer the same. With your experience and knowledge, I'd like to believe the hole reducer had nothing to do with her death.

Think of all the many, many little blues who have made it because of you! Your hard work, experience and knowledge, along with other bb experts, have made that possible!

Hope Mom, Dad and her sibling stay around for you to enjoy!

I dodn't think that your placing the hole reducer had anything to do with her death.She was probably suffering from some ailment to begin with and that is why she was not able to fly along with the rest of them.Some times eggs hatch on different days but they still all fledge on the same day.This sweet little girl was probably not fit to survive and nature made the decision.If she had been OK, her parent would have fed her and kept her alive.She would have found a way to fledge.

I agree with Michelle, I don't think the reducer had anything to do with her death. I think that she was ill or something else was wrong with her and that's why you found her one the ground yesterday.

I'm so sorry that this happened but please do not blame yourself, you did everything you could to try and help this little one out. It was just not meant to be.

Thanks so much for your kind words. I suppose there could have been something wrong--when she tried to fly she kept going nose first into the ground. I thought maybe she needed another day or so for her tail feathers to grow. In any case, I know that the reducers do help in many situations and thus are a good tool to have on hand. It's amazing, I suppose, that this is my first encounter with this situation when you consider how long I've been a bluebirder. It's certainly been a strange nesting season for me and I'm glad it's almost over so I can rest!

Aww, Kathy I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm by no means an expert, but I too find it doubtful that adding the hole reducer was the cause for her death. Sounds like something just wasn't quite right with her from the get-go. You did everything you could to help her.
