Mallard Ducks in the neighborhood

I notice that there are several ducks that like to sleep on the lawn in the neighborhood. They seemed to wander from yard to yard and then doze off in the yard. They don't seemed too afraid of people. My wife in fact mow the lawn to around 10 feet away from them and none of them bother to even wake up. I suspect that people are friendly to them. One of my neighbor let the ducks use his swimming pool.

I notice the males are starting to molt. There is a male and female pair that travel together. I thought ducks had their kids by now. I don't know if the pair is just getting an early start in courting or if she didn't bother laying eggs this time around.

I read that Ducks can lose their ability to fly for short time during molting. Does this occur? The reason is that I often seen them raid the ground feeder for corn, so I was wondering if I can switch to something else they won't eat during flightless season to prevent them from endangering themselves.
