duck egg question
Comments (6)Yes, she will set on a nest of nonfertile eggs. The sex drive of male mallards is incredible. Especially this time of year when the hens are all setting and are unavailable, or the unattached males are just dieing to get some action. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if they flew in for a romp every day, assuming that you have an uncovered pen, which you must, or why would you even think that they could have bred her? The big danger with that set up, is that she is dead meat if any predators happen by. They don't call them sitting ducks for nothing, although the proper term is "setting". If the eggs are fertile, you can tell now by candling them with a flashlight. If any are clear, throw them out, leaving the others, and get rid of the ball. If they are all clear, take them, so she'll start laying for you again. You should also know that Campbells, as a laying breed, are notoriously poor mothers. You'll find many exceptions, and people delight in bragging that they have one who sets full term and actually raises the young to boot. Still, those are the exceptions, and in general, even if they do set, they have a high rate of abandonment of eggs, or of ducklings, if they get that far....See MoreReleasing Mallard Ducks....please help!
Comments (13)I have 7 10 week old Mallards (4 male 3 female). I've had them since they were 3 days old. I live where I have access to a lake and my neighbors are ON the lake. Yesterday I took my ducks down to their property and slowly let my ducks out of their dog crate. Two flew into the lake and were swimming back to me when two Pekin ducks showed up. As my ducks were swimming back and almost to the bank these two white ducks each took my ducks grabbed them by the neck, twisted their necks and shoved their heads under water then pushed on my ducks until they were under water! We threw stuff at the white ducks until they turned loose of my mallards. My ducks flew up onto where I was and waddled as fast as they could to their crate. Will ducks kill other ducks??? Mine are still young but I'm hoping when they get older I will be able to release them so they can enjoy the lake etc. They can come home at night if they want but I want them to have the lake during the day. Is this going to be possible? Anyone out there know details on duck behavior? Thanks!!!...See MoreDo Mallard ducks eat fish?
Comments (6)what about black crested ducks, is this a mallard exclusive or any ducks. will they eat baby fish? I have an acre lake that is quite deep full of cat, perch and bass. We put geese and 4 ducks on for foliage clean-up. Some are saying they are eating the babies. Don't know who they can tell cause the ducks swim away as soon as anyone come near. I raised them in a pen for a while and know they smack ninety miles a hour in the mud for stuff, so not sure if that's what they are seeing. We are arguing about whether they are eating the fish. Comments (29)Sorry I didn't come back sooner, Helen. It would be illegal to trap the birds unless you could get the DNR to issue a permit and I haven't heard of that happening. I expect the birds would beat you back. It would be difficult to move them any way since they are flocking birds and a flock would be too difficult to catch and transport at one time. I expect using the pups to chase the birds could make the DNR unhappy. But it would depend on the situation. I would check with the authorities in advance and I know they would forbid it when the birds were nesting. I would be more concerned about injuries to the dogs than to the birds. If you have ever faced an angry duck or goose you know what I mean. Sandy...See More20ravel
