no takers for my birdhouse... :-(

I live in NYC in a semi-urban nabe in Brooklyn. I put a birdhouse up about 6 weeks ago, and I haven't seen anybody using it yet. At this point, does that mean nobody else will use it until possibly next Spring, or do birds sometimes need new homes throughout the year?

BTW, the house was affixed to a tree that has alot of vines growing up the sides, so the house is not totally out in the open, but there's not so much vine that it's hidden either. I thought it was the perfect spot, and the vines sorta cover the sides of the birdhouse... The house is about 20-25' off the ground.

The types of birds I normally see in my yard are: house finches, sparrows, northern mockingbird, catbird, cardinal and dark-eyed junco.

I've attached a pic of a very similar birdhouse to mine.

Any ideas on why no takers yet? Should I just be more patient?

The only bird you've listed that uses a cavity to nest in is the House Sparrow. House Sparrows do not need a cavity to nest in, but they will use one. All the other birds you have listed will not use a nest box. I would never let a House Sparrow nest in one of my boxes, but maybe it doesn't matter so much in the city?

At best, it's tricky getting a bird to use your box. My bluebird box was used often but never by bluebirds. Another bird house was never used but the hole in the oak tree was used by two different kinds of birds in succeeding years and then by squirrels.

Welcome to the forum. If you put a roof on a birdhouse with a large overhang, then prime (I like Zinsser bullseye primer) and paint it with exterior products (house paints), the paint will stay on. No sealer needed. I do 'age' the houses with paint, but it doesn't look like real age. The big box hardware stores and most places that carry paint have 'oops' sections where you can buy quality mis-mixed paints very cheaply, about $1 per quart and $5 per gallon. Sometimes they have nice bright colors, but might have any color on any day. If you have a Habitat Restore near you, their paint is very cheap, and sometimes free. Here's a link to my birdhouses. Here's the house again. The person who gardens at this house forgot the bees were there. His helper banged his head into the birdhouse, and the rest if obvious. Dozens of stings, more than 20 on his face. Is there anything we can do to encourage these guys to move along? They're pretty easy to move when it's cool at night, but where? They're in a very small back yard of a vacant house and some of the neighbors are concerned about them. I can bring them home, about a 20 minute drive. My yard is a little larger, and they could be 20 feet away from any house. They would also be out in the bright sun here. I thought they might fly the coop by now, but haven't. Any suggestions?

Oddie I am not sure why they are always white.. but all that I have ever seen have been painted white.. so I did mine that way too, I did not make this one.. a father of one of my son's friends did and the little spaces in front of each hole is for the babies to stand in while they are getting their flying wings.. so to speak.. LOL.. I will try to get pics of the Purple Martins once they arrive.. gosh, I guess I will have to have room service for them and turn down their beds. and so forth.. LOL Thanks

what a pity...I was so excited at the prospect of seeing little birds in there. I guess more often than not, they end up being merely decorative? :-(

It takes awhile sometimes. I'm no sure you will get bluebirds but you might get titmice, chickadees, house sparrows or house wrens. SO don't give up on it yet!
