My pileated woodpecker is getting tamer

This is the tree they like to land on before flying over to the feeder. I was sitting out on the patio for this shot. They don't seem to mind anymore.

Oh, WOW! LOVE your photos! Just been watching your gallery slideshow-is there a way to make the photos full screen?

Oh, I guess I've never looked at the slideshow feature before. Looks like the photo size in the slideshow is dependent on your browser window size. The photos I post online are pretty low resolution, usually 500x625 (which is a 4x5 ratio). So even if they could be viewed full screen, they probably wouldn't look that great. Sorry!

Thank you all for the nice comments! I've been working on the photography, so it's nice to hear compliments. bandjzmom - I don't know if it's a territory issue or not. I am certain that we have nesting pileateds in our area as I see them all year long (but have yet to find a nest, darn it). So perhaps this is one of last year's young trying to find his place in the world. I just don't know. Thanks again!

Thanks konrad, I do have Photo Bucket, but haven't been to their site for awhile. Catherinet, when I first saw him land on the tree stump, I ran for my camera thinking for sure he would be gone by the time I got out the door to take pics, but he was still there. I know he had to see me taking pictures. He was only 15-18 feet from where I was standing on my front porch....just on the other side of our driveway. I got 42 pictures.....2 were videos of him pecking away at that tree stump. I was so happy that I saw him that close because I had seen him flying a few times and he always landed in a tree across the street. Then he would go on the backside of the tree where I couldn't see him.

What beautiful birds! I can never get over how large pileated woodpeckers are. In the summer, I chop peanuts, almonds, cashews, pecans, and walnuts for the birds, squirrels, chipmunk, and rabbits. They all love it, and when I put it on the deck I get a great view! And the cold... This year it's hitting pretty hard, compared to last year. Sadly I don't get pileated woodpeckers up here (or should I say down here, they live in the U.P. in Michigan). Your picture is great. :)

thanks! I don't see him consistently but of and on...I hope it's the same one. I think I'll just build a house (it's easy enough), put it up, and keep my fingers crossed. I have 2 dead trees at the perimeter of my yard that are perfect so maybe I'll get lucky!

I tried what I do on my Picasa Web Album-just hit my F11 key and the photos went to full screen. I guess that works on everything

Yeah, with 7 species of woodpecker to visit my yard, that poor oak tree is on the receiving end of a lot of pounding. Here's a red-headed woodpecker on the same tree:

The pictures on this thread are amazing........I love bird watching and have 3 feeders and one birdbath in the front of the yard protected and shielded by large azaleas. I would love to set up a camera. We have had Bear and deer and red foxes, also the usual squirrels, armadillos, possums. We have 3 wooded acres and I like to call it my little piece of Heaven on earth. Right now I have started my first container garden in our pool area. Please take a look......

Gymell, I just love your photos!!! And I'm scared to admit how many hours I've spent watching your webcam....you might think I'm a stalker...lol! I wish I had woodpeckers come visit my feeders...the closest I've come is a northern flicker poking around in the grass!

Hah, thanks! Things are kind of slow on the feedercam right now. That's pretty typical for this time of year. Tons of activity while everyone is nesting in the spring, then once the chicks fledge, things quiet down in July and August. I haven't seen or heard any pileated woodpeckers for several weeks. It will pick up probably later next month, especially as we get closer to migration.
