mounting a box on a pole

Mine have fledged, but their box was on a fencepost and i'm reading about putting them on a pole, Could I get some instruction on how to do that? maybe some pictures or a website to show me? I don't want tragedies in the future, I was lucky this time. Thanks in advance for any help!

Gibby...glad they made it and very glad you stoped in here. I would suggest reading all of the website bluebars sent before the next nesting. We consider it the "bluebirders bible" there is much to learn! You'll be an expert by spring! ;D

if i understand your question correctly, there are no clearance restrictions. there are no restrictions for clearance from a panel or another conduit to a j-box, or receptacle. a chase nipple would be acceptable, which puts the box right up against the bottom o the panel. in your case, since it sounds like its outdoors,you probably will need a pipe stub just long enough to give you room to open your in-use cover and thats it. i dont know of a fitting like the "omega" thing you are talking about, but usually to cross another pipe you use a bend called a three point saddle.

i'm always noticing posts that are too thin on houses! my builder widened mine, which had also looked too skinny. the original posts were 6x6s, which, of course were really 5 1/2". on the north and south sides he put 1x6s, (really 5 1/2), bringing the NS dimension to 7". then, on the east and west sides he used 1x8s, which were really 7 1/4". so the E & W sides overlap the N & S sides by about 1/8 inch at each corner. in other words, the corners don't meet flush, as they would with mitered corners, there's a little reveal on 2 sides. the true dimensions are 7" all around, and the proportions are much better now.

I assume you mean an electric dryer. Sorry, but you don't have enough capacity in your present (very old) electrical panel for one. In fact, you have a hazardous situation there. Your four branch circuits at the bottom of that panel are dangerously overfused. They all appear to have 30 amp fuses in them, but the chances that they're wired for that current are nil. Most likely all of those fuses should be 15 amps, maybe 20 amps at most. You are risking a fire. Until you can have an electrician look at your system and confirm what the rating of those 4 plug fuses at the bottom should be, please replace all of them with 15 amp fuses. If they blow, you'll have to stop using some loads, and/or alternate the usage of high-power appliances. Please get this taken care of right away. I'm concerned about you and your family. If you have a gas range so that you're no longer using the electric range outlet, you could possibly use your range fuse pair to feed a small 6-8 circuit subpanel. Then you could feed your dryer from that sub. You could also use the sub to install 4-6 more 20 amp branch circuits, to ease some of the overloading you have now. This will mean some rewiring of your home. However, that's just a patch. Rather than installing a subpanel, you might as well do the job right. Install an entire new main panel and upgrade your service to at least 100 amps. And please consider a complete rewiring.

At the sialis site (and others), I found a lot of info on where to mount the box, but very little practical, step-by-step information on how to mount the box to a pole. I'm talking "drill this size hole", then "use this size bolt and attach Part A to Part B" type stuff. Website after website tantalizes readers with menu options such as "how to mount the box on the pole" and then proceeds to gloss over the "how" part entirely. Frustrating, especially if you are not particularly handy with tools. The best practical info discussing actual purchase and assembly of pole, parts (including baffle) and box that I found, was at the link below.

Matt That is very interesting and very informative, I will keep this for future reference. I haven't gotten any birds yet this year, probably won't so I think I will try your method next year, move my box and hope my luck changes. Your instructions are very clear and precise and I think I can do this myself, without hubby's help!! Thank you for taking the time to answer this,I posted it last year!!!

Thanks Carol for posting, It is so detailed, that I think I can do that myself I was confused on how to make the baffle and didn't want to ask my hubby for help(again). I am going to put another box up, in the back yard, maybe I'll have better luck next year, no takers this year and I have lots of worms growing. That's my luck, probably if I had no worms, I would have birds! ! Thanks again!!!
