Thank you. That's what I thought but it wasn't bobbing its tail a lot - some but not constantly. Also, I've heard pewees around. But I think it's not surprising that we would have both. I thought phoebe too but wanted to be sure.
We have two of them hanging around our front porch almost constantly. I assume they are planning a nest but I haven't seen any evidence. Fortunately we use our front door very seldom so they should be relatively undisturbed there.
catherinet - I don't know the answer to your question. Rachel identified 'my' bird as a phoebe, so like you, it seems to be phoebes near my house. I did not mean to imply that the pewees also are hanging around the house, simply that I have heard them in the yard. We live on 20 acres with 12 acres of woods so I can hear a bird without it needing to be very close to the house.
Eastern Phoebes are fond of building nests over doors and near homes, using humans as a predator shield, but Eastern Wood Peewees nest near my house and I've photographed them from my deck
9-8-08, juvenile Eastern Wood-Peewee, a few yards from my deck, 3:13 p.m
