Feeding new hatchlings

My babies are 3 days old. I saw mama this morning going in the box. I left for work and came home around 3:30 and I didn't go outside right away, but from 5: o,clock on, I didn't notice her at all around the box or the dad. I checked the babies and they seemed to be ok. It is now 9:20 and I still haven't seen them. I did put mealworms out. No takers yet. should I worry?

It would be highly unusual for both of them to disappear. I am guessing they are still around and you just aren't seeing them. Have you seen them this morning at all? Keep checking the babies to make sure they are ok. If something would have happened to both of them you would need a rehabber but if something happened to just one of them the other should be able to take care of them ok provided they wouldn't need to be brooded by the female which she normally does until day 6 or so but if it is warm enough out they should be ok. Good luck, hopefully you see them.

Yesterday, I got all the cats changed to another container. The leaves had pretty much dried out, but after checking, the cats were doing fine. I must have had eggs, too, because I saw 2 hatching as I worked with them. The cats are so clever! As they move down to the second leaf to feed, they first chew thru the petiole to make the leaf hang down which causes the leaf to fold in half lengthwise so the tiny cat can "stitch" it closed to create its nest. They are so tiny I'm afraid I'm going to squish one as I change out the food and container. I just think that this caterpillar performs an amazing feat in fashioning its nest. I, for one, am very impressed!

You should never put a nestling of one speices into another speices nest, they all eat a varitey of different foods and raise them differently. For instance a bluebird nestling cannot tolerate earthworms, plus speices in nests in trees typically fledge earlier than those in cavities. Not sure what you did but what you should have done is to put the baby back in the nest, add a sprarrow spooker to the nestbox and watch that the adults were still feeding the nestling. Maybe it was ready to fledge, not sure unless you knew how old the nestling was. Please visit sialis.org for information on sparrow spookers. Yes Lexa, HOSP will even nest in spruces! Tight evergreens are places HOSP LOVE to build their domed nests. It's angering. But take note that House finches STRONGLY resemble HOSP from afar. Make sure you here the distinctive chirp before using any guns! We had some HOFI nest around here. The HOSP don't nest in the pines near this property anymore. And I'm also overwhelmed seeing all the juveniles. They truly breed like RATS! ARG! 2 neighbor's they nest at...and are of course fed all summer... :/ What's worse is now I have NO decoys. I have 2 bb guns. Both miss about 90% of the time. I have shaky hands too. I was lucky enough to nail one juvie when the flock showed up in my yard, and one year nailed a male HOSP. I'm gonna resurrect my DRST again in a week or two. My neighbors have parties around the 4th so it would be a bad idea any time soon. I wish I had a better gun! D$5n HOSP! HATE EM! The 5 nestlings appear to be doing good. Mom and Dad are feeding well or so it would seem. Can't wait to finally have some juvie Bluebirds to counteract all these HOSP! ~Tim~

Hi, I think it is a Carolina wren, not a House wren, but no matter. It is a very tough situation, and I am not sure what you can do. The fledglings do not move to nests, but to the branches of trees and bushes. So if you could get them off the ground, into the branches, out of the cats' reach, that might help. In the meantime, be careful not to keep visiting the nest, as it will attract predators and worse, frighten the chicks out of the nest before they are ready to perch.

Donna, I did see the female this morning, going in and out of the box a couple of times. I didn't check the babies yet, but I will when I get home this afternoon. Hopefully everything is OK. They haven't seen the mealworms yet, but a mockingbird has. Hopefully they will find them too, but the mockingbird will run them off. I didn't put them near the box, they are closer to the house.
