Hi Trixie ~ They take various amounts of time to fledge. Sometimes they go pretty much at the same time (say, within a couple of hours.) But there can be one or two which don't get up the courage until the following day. They may have also hatched a day later than their siblings, so staying in the box allows them to grow a little more tail and practice flying motions for a few more hours. That way they have a better chance of being strong flyers and staying up off the ground.

If you get up early tomorrow, you may see the parents coaxing them to come out of the box.

We just fledged 5 from our pair's 3rd nest of the season. The whole process took @28 hours. The first nestling out at 11:30am on Day 16, and the last one flew at 3:15pm on Day 17.

The previous nest (also of 5) all flew the same day over about 5 hours.

Thanks for the responses. I feel better. The previous nest (5) all flew while I went out to lunch! I sat out and watched all morning, took my mom out for 1 hour and poof - everyone is gone.

All very normal, especially if they hatch on different days. They grow so fast, even one day makes a big difference. When the parents want the babies to fledge, they might stop feeding them, so they will be hungry and motivated. The parents might tease them with food, hovering in front of them, and then fly away. Other times, they might feed them extra much, to keep them in if they are not ready. The bluebirds know best.
Sometimes it's pop pop pop pop pop, they all fledge one after another, or it could happen over 2-3 days. First you will see their little faces stretching up to peek out. Then their whole head, and eventually, their toes on the entrance hole. Close to fledging time, you might hear the parents calling them out, and you might notice a subtle difference in the babies' calls. But I do think they wait until nobody is looking!

We are down to only lonely baby in the box. Poor thing has been crying and crying for the past two hours but no mom or dad in sight. Tough love I guess.

FWIW mom and dad were outside this morning trying to coax the last little guy out. I thought for sure that by the time I got home from work the nest box would be empty. I was wrong. He is still in there whining away. Maybe tomorrow.

As long as he is still making some occasional noise, and doing some peeking out, he should be fine. Are they still feeding him? Or maybe he fledged this morning?

He's still in there. Mom and dad were around this morning again trying to coax him out and once again I thought he would be flying the coup today. But he was still in there peeping away when I got home from work. I don't know if they are feeding him or not, I don't have enough time in the morning before work to watch. Dad swoops me every time I go out in the am. I'm home tomorrow, maybe I'll get to see him leave...or not.

Finally!!! I saw him peeking out of the hole looking like he wanted to go. I watched him sway back and forth for about half an hour until he finally took off.

Is the little guy out yet? Maybe his foot is stuck in the nesting material.
