Bad News: Dead babies, probably ants

Babies starting hatching wed, did a quick check yesterday and they were alive, but today noticed no activity, no female around so I said to my self I better check on them. I checked and they were all dead 5 of them with ants all over them.

It's sad, but this stuff happens and we all learn from it. Will eventually replace wooden post with a metal or plastic one very soon.

I figure that probably there was only a few ants at first, not noticeable and after they were born the ants were attracted to them even more. Actually I really didn't see the ants until I pulled the nest out, that may be why the female was always resting half way out the hole. Anyway I did put some grease on wooden post but obviously didn't have enough or they are coming up through the cracks through the middle of post. Anyway will start over and replace wooden posts with metal or plastic ones. Is there any preference of metal vs. PVC(plastic). Is one better then the other, lets not have this happen again.

P.s.--not positive about cause of death, it doesn't appear that they were pecked to death or something like that. Maybe the ants came after their death. Either way the mother isn't around, I don't know whether she left after the last one died or whether she left before any of them died. I've even thought of a genetic problem or feeding the babies insects that have just been sprayed in one of the many gardens nearby, will probably never know.

Keith Sorry about the birds. You want to use a slick metal pole. I use electrical conduit from Home Depot. Costs only about2$ and I can make 2 out of it.

I'm sorry, too, Keith. Sometimes we just don't know what happened. I'm glad you're remounting your box, though, and agree with Cathy on the electrical conduit. I use the 3/4", cut at 7 1/2' and sink the pole into the ground at least 1 1/2'. Remember to cover the hole on top of the pole with either an end-cap or duct tape. I learned the hard way that ants can go through the inside of the pole, out the top and onto nestbox!

If she was that close to giving birth when you got her, it's just possible that the stress of the move caused her to abort. I've had this happen a couple of times with livebearers. With Black Mollies especially it's impossible to tell sometimes tht they're pregnant. Don't worry - she'll probably give you fine live babies the next time around.

Ant condos... bad, good or no difference to conifers?

First of all, out of the hundreds of plants I've put into the ground the last six months, only about a dozen or so specimens have condos so far. That said, maybe ants expand like people and I could have a full fledge megatropolis soon. I know the cats enjoy them and they aren't dangerous or agressive stinging types. I am curious what is going to happen to them on a rainy day - or perhaps they know it's now the dry season. I will be completely against any kind of pesticides or other people created chemicals until I begin to lose plants. My garden is full of frogs, dragonflies, bees and butterflies and I'd prefer not to risk killing some of the other beneficial types of insects. I am for sure not worried about some of my more established specimens. They are thick underneath a specimen of Pinus contorta 'Taylors Sunburst' that I've had for a couple years. I just worry that some of the other new little guys I've planted won't be able to retain enough moisture with the ground being so porous. Here's a couple photos.

As long as it's okay to leave it on the momma, I'm fine with letting it get bigger. I think at this point, it's still wayy too small to stand on it's own. Will do! I'm so excited!! :) I'll post pics soon! My phone isn't charged at the moment, but once it is I'll probably flood my thread with the pictures haha. Oh, and I did take your advice on the K-Cups for other leaves! I love it. It works perfectly, and looks very nice. I put this one back in the glass without the drainage hole because that's where it seemed to be "happy". I figured if it ain't broke, don't fix it (even though the K-Cups are a much safer pot).

Hoo boy, you guys don't even want to see my take on "weeds" and the proper definition of such. So here goes! Weeds, by definition, cannot be plants native to a given area. That just doesn't compute. So...calling silver maples "weeds" simply indicates that the name-caller doesn't value this species highly. That has nothing whatever to do with "weeds", which are by definition, non-native, usually herbaceous plants, usually brought about by agriculture, which have naturalized within a given area. I just said this elsewhere in the past couple of weeks, but if you happen to own bottomland forest in roughly the north half of N. America, silver maple is a key species. It matters not whether you like silver maple....it remains an important member of the plant community that typically colonizes such sites. Oh and I could go on and on......but mercifully, won't!

Thanks for the advice, I have been thanking about the capping the top of pole. What you described on length and width is pretty much what I'm thinking of, won't really know to I can see it when I go down to the Home Depot or Lowes.

I made a bluebird box for my neighbor and he mounted it on a 10ft 1/2 inch pole. That old blue bird house sways back and forth in the wind quiet a bit.

Keith, you better cut that 10' pole in half. Wouldn't trust 1/2" conduit at that height with a box on top.

Sorry about the ants-besides HOSPS, HOWRS and the heat, it's just one more thing to test our sanity on the road to fledging.

To all:
Got wooden pole replaced with 3/4 conduit, I've capped the conduit and have put Vaseline on pole, I also modified the bird house a little for the summer residence, this will make it cooler. I've tried this roof a couple years in the past and it hasn't bother them and as far as I know they have never got wet either. Now its just a matter of time to see if they show up again to occupy, I've seen the male, and a few others, but I'm not sure whether the female is with him. Most of the time I see them toward the west with the sun in my eyes.
