Same here. So far just a nest, but I think there will be eggs.
Do you feed mealworms? We do not normally have a nest this late, but we have feed the mealworms heavily this past nesting time and I am wondering if just because she has had plenty to eat, if that night have allowed her body to produce more eggs-Just speculating

It's definitely not too late for another brood! A couple of years ago I had a nesting that started mid-August and fledged the 2nd week of September! Normally, though, nestings for my area (central Maryland) are usually over mid to late August. 2nd nestings on most of my trails have just reached fledging stage, so I'm wondering if there will be 3rd nestings.

Connie, we do feed mealworms but this yr not as many as usual partly because this is a new Mama and she has been cautious. Papa gets the idea as do the babies but her not so much! Getting used to it though. Hope you get to see some more eggs soon! Our babies just fledged on the 3rd and here we are with 2 new eggs already! Busy busy....

I monitor nestboxes at 5 different locations, including 4 boxes here at my home, for a total of about 40. Most of my 2nd nestings have fledged their young and, as of this morning, I have 2 3rd round nests ready for eggs. We'll see. I need to sit and look at my totals to see how this season compares with last year . . . things should start to slow down soon so that I can get some numbers together.

That's a lot to keep track of Kathy. We only have the one nest to worry about and that can be 'stressful' sometimes.

We have 2 eggs and a family of sparrows.
I was out last night at one am putting up a new sparrow spooker.

The bluebird pair that nest in my yard had a successful nest in April/May and then on June 26 I found 4 more eggs but they haven't hatched yet so I'm concerned there may be a problem.

i live in ct. we have a fourth brood. the female is our original of 2006. we lost the male 2 years ago. he was my best friend. he pretty much followed me like a dog wherever in the yard and ate along side of me at the picnic table. she still looks good. she has done 3 broods each year before this. i make their lives easier by feeding them mealworms and superworms all year round. it helps with the babies especially with 90 degree temps. so keep your head up!

Mine have had two successful broods of five each. I expected them to be gone soon, but they have built another nest. I never expected a third nesting way up in MA. No eggs yet though, so time will tell if they actually start a third brood this season.

Connie -- hope the sparrows don't become a problem. Touch wood we've not had any yet...!
ML --sorry about your 4 not hatching. We've had that happen before and have tried to figure out why but who knows for sure.
We usually get about 3 nestings a yr, once or twice it's been 2. Gets so hot here too, we watch Mama with her head hanging out of the hole trying to get some air I imagine.

So far my home made sparrow spooker seems to be working.
I have seen the sparrows in the yard (we have a very large yard)but not close to the box like they were the one day.
Babies should be hatching soon. Mom started sitting on the 18th if July.
I am still feeding meal worms 2 or 3 times a day. Mom pops right out of her box when I whistle.

Thanks Bridget. The nest did indeed fill up. Three eggs were laid and three young hatched. They are doing great and are due to fledge in a few days. Two of the young from the previous nesting have also come back to join them. Watching the hierarchy among them is interesting. If one of the young from the previous nesting is perched where momma blue wants, she will just give a peck and the young one will move to another perch. The young even know about the mealworms and how to use the feeder. Hopefully this will be beneficial if they decide to stay the winter like their parents do.

I wonder if a brood this late may benefit from the fact that most of the other cavity nesters are done and there appears to be no competition for nest boxes. The third brood of three successfully fledged this afternoon. No other birds went anywhere near their box or any of the other boxes in my yard. They did great. Not a single blowfly larva found after examining the empty nest. The three young are now up in the trees above where their nest box was. The parents are still coming for mealworms. This pair successfully fledged a total of 13 young this season.

I just wanted to get a feel for how late birds nest. I just discovered a Robin's nest with 3 healthy Robins nestlings. I'm in zone 5, central IL. They will probably fledge this weekend, so members of the thrush family can fledge in Oct in zone 5.

I have never heard of a Robin nesting so late in the season. I wonder if their first nest was destroyed and they decided to try again. It has been unseasonably warm. Let's hope no cold spells come through to destroy the insect populations before they're ready to be on their own. Let us know when they fledge.
