Rose-breasted grosbeak coming to my Hummingbird feeder

Hi

Just like the title says I have a rose-breasted grosbeak coming to the hummingbird feeder. Has anyone ever heard of this? He appears to be drinking. I also have an oriole coming to it too as well as 3 hummingbirds. I have a bird bath set out for the birds too. Thanks

I have seen House Finches and Goldfinches do this. Catbirds and Red Bellied Woodpeckers have drunk sugar water from a bowl in my yard too.

Yep! I've seen House Finch drinking away at the hummer-feeder. Even bats will drink from them at night, too.

WalMart has an Oriole Feeder, with instructions on how to make the (orange) nectar. (About the same as 3-1/water sugar mix, only they add orange food color.)

Some people put a (plastic) glass out to accomodiate these sugar loving cousins! I have some deep red ones ... goblets, and champaign style. You've reminded me to give it a TRY!

This year is the first in about 5 years that I've seen the grosbeaks. I had 5 males on the feeder at one time, with more females scattered about. Here's a picture of a pair that I shot. Of course, the mail had his back to me!

Lucky you. Each Spring from about 2001-2003 I had a rose-breasted grosbeak visit my sunflower feeder for about four days before moving on. I haven't seen any since then.(eastern Iowa)

Congratulations to you! That is a terrific new bird to have. It's so interesting that the females are so very different. Those birds sure do LOVE the grape jelly. They also enjoy oranges. You can slice some up and put them out on a plate for them, or you can buy a fruit feeder and hang it up for them. Here is a link that might be useful: Fruit feeder examples

I have a rose breasted GB that loves the grape jelly I put out for the orioles. Red bellied WP like jelly 2.

Thanks for all the replies. I will have to add grape jelly to my grocery list. I would love to see a bat at the feeder. Happy birdwatching.

My Red Bellied eats jelly and oranges. The Orioles and Catbirds only eat oranges once in a while. LOL I would love to see a bat drink from it too!

I put out nectar, oranges and grapes (not grape jelly) and have both Baltimore and Orchard orioles, Ruby-throated hummingbirds, Gray catbirds, Rose-breasted grosbeaks, house finches, and others eating almost constantly.

Cathy, I'm amazed that your oranges aren't more popular, we go through several a day with the orioles and catbirds the main indulgers. My woodpeckers don't eat the fruit at all.

elke, no need to add food coloring to either hummingbird or oriole nectar, they will find it just fine without. And I use the same ratio for both as both hummers and orioles eat from either type of feeder - apparently no one told them that the little red feeder is for hummers and the big orange one is for orioles, lol.
