Rose Breasted Grosbeak

I looked out and saw a beautiful male Rose Breasted Grosbeak at our feeders today...and it has been a long long time since I have seen one.. was 5 years ago.. here at this place... They are so pretty and I do wish they would stay and have their young here.. We live in Middle Tennessee right on the most western part next to the Tennessee River.

I will never forget the first time I saw a Rose Breasted Grosbeak. They look like they're dressed up in tuxedos They are just stunning. We had quite a few around here last year, but it seems to vary year to year. Hopefully they'll stay around your place this year. The ones here seemed to love the black oil sunflower seeds.

I remember my first rose breasted grosbeak:) I was taking my dog out when I saw it at the feeder. I grabbed my binoculars and was amazed! It only stayed that day :(

Last year I saw one male Rose Breasted GB. This year I saw 3 males and one female. Same with Oriols. Last year one male. This year 3. I think parents bring their offspring back with them. The GBs just pass through and nest further north, but the orioles nest here in NE Ok. My dad had one of the pendulous nests hanging from a tree in his front yard.

Hmmm, I hate to say that I don't think so. A Rose-breasted Grosbeak has a stouter and paler bill; as thick as this bird's bill is, it just isn't convincing for a RBGR. A female RBGR has a very bold head pattern (but not a dark malar stripe, as this bird has) and also has white wing bars (this bird does not). This bird is pretty rufous in color; too much so for a RBGR. With all of that said, along with that long straight tail, I cannot rule out Song Sparrow here.

Where are you located? I have a pair that passes through each spring (grosbeak) but they never stick around long, and no Orioles for years.

They seem to move through here pretty fast too. We get them for a short while in the spring and hardly at all in the fall. I only saw one last fall at the feeders. He made one appearance and was gone. They are stunning both at rest and in flight.

My mother in law has a Rose Breasted Grosbeak and also a Summer Tanager at her house. She lives 1/4 of a mile from me and I don't have them. i'm so jealous! They're both beautiful!
