Sucessful season comes to a close : ` (

The babies fledged yesterday (thank God) I only saw 3 of them go. I was so afraid to open the box as Pop did not look to be feeding them as well as I thought he should be and with this heat, well lets just say I was prepared for the worst.I think the 250 wax worms helped. The last baby out could not fly but it was a great hopper. I tried to catch it before it got to the thick brush in the woods but no luck. Pop stuck around with it. The first batch of babies are taking care of these fledglings. My poor beautiful Mom brought 10 babies into the world before she died. One of the males from the first batch has her beautiful sky blue color and white edged wings. I was relieved to open an empty box. I am worried about my little "hopper" and have tried to locate her, been watching Pop but have not seen him take worms to the ground, I don't hear any chirping so I am hoping she eventually made it into the trees. So, that's my season, 15 babies 10 Blues 5 TRES. I will say prayers I see all 5 of the new babies at the feeder soon. I have 10,000 meal worms to be eaten! : )

Glad to hear of your success Lisa! I'm sure pop will watch after that hopper until it can fly.

My season isn't quite over, But so far fledged 11 TRES and no bluebirds.

I have 2 BB pairs. One with 4 young and the other here - with 5 that are about 11-13 days old. They all appear the same age even though they hatched over a 3 day period!

Every season goes SOOO fast! Even though I'm not close to done, I can feel the nesting season reaching it's end for the birds and summer FLYING by. It's sad it doesn't last longer but nature has its reasons.

Stay cool! Here in the big OH we're also suffering from the heat wave. 98 degrees!

Lisa that is wonderful news. So happy that Pop and the previous clutch were able to launch those little ones. That must be such a huge relief for you. I do so hope you see them at the feeder soon!

Hello Everyone! Boy Have I been busy! Toni, I pulled the Adeniums out of the container to see what was up.. They are actually in like a 3" pot, and are about 2" above the bottom of the container.. so I don't have to worry about root rot! The containers don't have drain holes. I am going to look around to see what I can come up with for shallow. :) Thanks! I need to do some reading up on them and see about a hair cut. LOL! Nancy~ Thank you! Your advice is always welcome! I have a huge shrub I was considering and figured I'd keep a close eye on them when we get hot! Here it is.. Please excuse the mess and the neighbors trailor.. LOL! Spring cleaning and getting gradens ready.. stuff everywhere..LOL!! I was thinking of hanging it on the east side. My patio faces west and gets the intense late day sun. so don't have alot of options for outside. Thanks everyone!! JoJo

Hey, sounds familiar - we were in the same boat a few years ago. The builder left us with lousy subsoil/fill to start a lawn on. Sometimes I almost (not quite, but almost) want to thank him, because with all that lousy soil all over the place, it has given me opportunities to try different experiments and methods of soil building. I enjoy the learning process, and tinkering with soils and plants is fun and educational. But the rest of the time I generally think of our builder as an amoral, stingy, greedy, smarmy, narcissist with the landscaping know-how of a penthouse poodle. Anyhoo.... a few words of advice: Understand that adding high-carbon organic materials will increase soil fertility and boost the nitrogen holding capacity of your recovering soils. Conversely, adding nitrogen will increase soil organic matter and humus, as plants use nitrogen to build biomass which then adds to the organic fraction in the soil. It's a chicken and egg thing. But of these two, I believe the system is better jump started with a steady supply of nitrogen. To put it another way - compost is great, but don't forget to keep the organic nitrogen fertilizers coming. Make regular applications of things like corn meal, blood meal, urine, alfalfa meal, or even commercial organic fertilizer if you prefer. -Diggity

Bamatufa, I thank you for that additional note. Mine did not rot over the last winter, even with just a blanket over them, because I'd heeled them into my DH's raised beds. Which drain very well. When the time comes this year, I will just surround their "dig" with some 4' tall garden fencing, and use the leaves from neighbors (which I take all the bags they put out for pickup) to fill in, and then I have some old hurricane tarps I can secure to the wire fencing. Naturally, I will be cutting down the big stems again. But for experimental purposes, I will take the potted Orinoco into the Teahouse for the winter to keep growing. I have visions of the large bananas and birds of paradise in the Bellingrath Gardens greenhouse for tropical plants, and it is sort of a dream I have, sitting in the Teahouse surrounded by tropical plants, while a cold winter rain falls on the metal roof. And of course, I am listening to soft music, drinking a cuppa tea, and reading on my Kindle. So I'm not sad that this hot weather is coming to an end.

A light will provide all the light required if the frequencys given off are correct, most of my plants have not seen more than a month of sun this year the growlamps sold will work as a 100% light source, i dont like the CFL lamps as they need to be so close to a plant to work (nearly touching) , but they work fine if you have only a couple of plants, if you have more plants, then the best way is to get a sodium or metal halide lamp, put it about 2 meters above the plants and they will grow quickly put it further away and it will cover more plants

So glad they made it to fledging Lisa! I sure hope they all come back to the feeders for you! Did you ever get a photo of your Momma with the white edged wings? She must be similar in color to my female that is a sky blue color.

My season isn't done yet, five of the six eggs hatched this week from the third nesting. Also I have one box with four TRES eggs in it yet, they had a really late nesting for some reason.

I am cautiously optimistic, Pop is taking worms in 2 different areas. He is going high into the Oaks for several trips then he is going to to a lower tree (about 10 ft up)I hope this means that my little "hopper" has at least managed to get up in the tree and survived last night. Maybe one more day will have her ready to join the others! These babies are being very quiet, I don't hear them talking to Pop and like the last fledging, they were silent.

How wonderful it is to have a great season, but sad that you lost MaMa blue. I to have had a good season so far 9 babies fledged and 4 more eggs in the box 3rd nesting. Congrats and I hope you see all your little ones soon at your feeder.

Very sorry to read about your Mama Blue, Lisa; however, I am so impressed with what you did to help the babies...replacing nest, checking for parasites, etc. Here's hoping you see all five new babies come to your feeder!

Enjoyed reading of everyone's success this year. We had 7 Blues (2 nestings) and 6 TRES fledge.
