they are peeking out!

Ahh they are 17 days today and peeking out of the box a LOT!

I am perched on my kitchen cabinet with TWO cameras set up and pointed their direction.

I had Mom and Dad eating great out of the cage feeder, but then I went and put the lid on and now they wont go near it.

SO I went and let it hang off the side for awhile hoping they will get back to going to it.

So far NO they are just flying back and forth from the pasture brining in bugs.

With the chicks peeking out - does this mean they will fledge today, they almost get their feet up there, but then nthey change their mind.

Mom and Dad are really dive bombing me today when I go out there LOL

Still concerned as to why they wont go back to the meal worm feeder but maybe they needed a change, they ate a LOT this morning before I jacked with the top!

Hi Debbie,

Nothing is certain, but Day 17 is THE day. 7 of 8 from our first two broods this year fledged on the 17th day... the other one flew on the 16th day.

We have 5 very warm chicks in the 3rd nest now on their 10th day in the box, and they are already peeking a bit.

Sounds like you're ready tho... we hope you get to see them fly. :)

I hope so too, BUT of course I have to leave in an hour and wont be home until nearly dark. then tomorrow I have to leave early and wont be back until late afternoon.
It will be a miracle if I get to see them fledge!

Agree. If you used sets rather than onion plants they are long-day varieties and you live in a long-day variety location so leave them to continue forming bulbs. Assuming they don't go to seed you'll eventually see most all of the bulb above the ground. For future reference you might want to read through some of the onions - which type - posted here to learn about the problems with using sets, the right varieties for your location, the advantages of plants vs. sets, etc. Dave

The bottom one looks like it hasn’t gotten any sun—I have never had a bud or leaves not turn green. You are much more careful with your bulbs than I am but I too put them outside (on the deck) for the summer and bring them in in the fall. I never dig up the bulbs and refrigerate them—they’ve been in their pots for years, only re-potting when they outgrow them with so many new bulbs shooting off the original. I started with three bulbs and now have over twenty, all produced from the first three. Once I had a bud which was on a stalk that never grew more than a few inches, but the flower still bloomed. I don’t know whether this helps but I do try to peel back some of the outer layers at the top of the bulbs in the fall so scapes don’t get “trapped” in a tight neck, and I even slit the sides of the neck with a sharp knife. I sprinkle the bulbs with cinnamon, which I read prevents fungus. Right now I have nine buds and one almost ready to open. The blooms shown are from 2018 winter.

At least we didn't get 20" of the dreaded white stuff, but gusting winds and about 2-3" is expected. Here most of the other snow had melted, but all the yards have had standing water/ice. Oh how I long to step outside and see what Phil is seeing...Whaaaa! Janet

What kind of vine is this?

Its a Thunbergia Grandiflora also known as Sky Vine I believe. I think our climates are similar and here it loses its leaves in the winter, it withstands the rare frosts we have and returns strongly in the Spring. It does much better in the ground than in a pot.

Debbie, they MAY not go until tomorrow. Mine are 17 days and they are not leaving today. (I think) I always see some peeking the day before they leave so maybe you will luck out. Do NOT check the box tonight (but I am sure you know that). The parents usually do some prepration for the fledge. They fly around and chase everything away. Then they sit and call the babies. They will tease them with food and not give them any. When you see this going on you will know it's time. (of course they are Blue Birds and they may just all jump out at once when nobodys looking)! LOL

Hey Debbie I hope you get to see them go, I think I scared the last batch from leaving, they left after I went away in the evening. Maybe you'll have to camouflage your Kitchen window next time.

Well they didnt fledge ( I dont think).
Maybe tomorrow, I hope BEFORE I have to leave here at 10:30.
I bought a new tape and will let it tape as long as it will while I am gone, But it will only tape 90 minutes.
Arg!!!!
I sure want to see them - I know one is a male, not sure about the other one, and now I cant look ahhhhhh

One time I set up a video camera that ran for 8 hours while I was at work, determined to see a fledge. Had to watch the whole tape as the leaves fluttered in the breeze, a deer walked by, and the shadows slowly moved from one side to the other. At almost the very end of the tape, BLIP, gone! No feeding, no peeking, no leaning, no nothing, just BLIP, gone!
Now I go and enjoy Dave's pics... and leave it to the pros.

Yep Guess I will do that too, as I got up at 7:45 (too late) they were GONE!!
I put out Mealies and suet treat but have seen nothing of the parents as of yet.
Do they come back to get food for the babies or just disappear?
I HAVE EMPTY NEST SYNDROME!!!
