Nelda - You are very kind to try to help. The problem is, this is not a wound, per se. I believe now after thought that it is some kind of tumor growth, black and slippery. I have since found out that he is very elderly and was 'given' to some other people a week ago. He was very weak and near death. I can say candidly, the people who had this poor fellow are very, very poor and would not bother further, I am certain. In fact they would think it think it nuts to spend this kind of time and effort, whereas I would do it without question. The wife of the original couple I thought owned it came down and took him back home for her husband to assess when he gets home - as they have chickens and roosters and grew up with them. She had seen him a week ago and so knew his story. She agreed his future was dismal if returned to those folks and we both agreed euthanasia might be a kindness, however regrettable, because there is something really unhealthy going on with that tumor in an elderly bird. It would be a mercy for him to no longer have to suffer the misery of the flies bombarding him. The people who had this fellow would put him in a small cage with no attention - I just couldn't have that; it would be excruciating for this handsome fellow to go out that way. The poor guy was very weak from his days lost in the woods and no doubt the mild, gentle handling was even a strain, but he just laid in my arms in the towel and was then just lying looking very near death, and was becoming cool to the touch. This afternoon in the yard he was lying in a huddle looking very near death, as well. It was all just too much for him, it seems. I am very sad about this whole thing, but I can take a small solace that he will not long be suffering the flies and tumor complications, and will not linger painfully in a small cage with no relief. I spent some time stroking him and telling him he was a good boy and a fine fellow before putting him in the cage for her to take to her husband. So he had kind words and a caring touch at the end, more than many or most roosters, probably. (Can you tell I'm a vegetarian?) If her husband, more of an expert, feels optimistic about him, I'll post the resolution.

I ended up with some berry gatorade as they didnt have clear or watermelon gatorade. I think he drank his fill earlier though. He had fallen and when I put him on back on the flowers, he was just jumping from flower to flower nectaring and I dont know how much nectar they need. He didnt seem interested in the gatorade, but then, he doesnt seem interested in the flowers right now so maybe he got the nourishment he needs for the time being. Butterflutter, I dont have a spare wing. And I really dont think it is that easy to do. If I could, I would fix his wing because I feel very badly.

Carolyn, I agree with you. I put out my outside tomatoes after May 1, usually around the 5th. Since I market garden and I can get higher prices for early tomatoes, I plant them in my high tunnel as early as possible and sometimes I get burned! The forecast is for daytime highs in the 60-70's and lows in mid 30's to 40's. Inside my high tunnel, I can keep it in the 50's with row cover and get a big head start with them. This year just wasn't my year. Here is an update on my loses. Hoop building #1 102 Tomato plants in the building. 53 appear to be fine, 16 have some damage, but I think they will come out of it. 33 are TOASTED! I have about 20 extras to replant with, so I will have to buy around 13-30 new plants. Not a big problem. Hoop Building #2 27 Cherry tomato plants. 26 appear to be fine, 1 with damage. This was really surprising. There was 3 layers of row cover and the hot water 2 liter bottles placed every other plant. That was a good idea. All in all, I am out about $15-25 to buy some new plants. This is depending on the price. Could be less or it could be more.

He or she is a bird, s/he is used to being outside all the time, even in the rain, so s/he may not feel as bad about the situation as you do. Bring him in, leave him out, or take him to a wildlife rehabilitation center, there still may not be much you or anyone else can do for him if he has internal injuries. Depends on how involved you want to become. I worked at a wildlife rehab place for five years. There is only so much one can do. You can try to help if you want, but realize that sometimes carp happens. Try to find a local nature center or library or someplace that can give you the number of a wildlife rehabber. Maybe just talking to that person on the phone can help you assess what can be done. Often, when birds break their wings, especially if it is small bird, they can't bet set and can't ever fly again. Sometimes they can, but the failure rate is much higher than the sucess stories. I'm not trying to be callous, I know how you feel, believe me, any compassionate person would feel the same. But this is a bird's life. This happens to millions of birds all the time, you just don't see it. Window crashes are a huge cause of bird fatalities. Some even argue that it is the number one cause of mortality, even beyond predators.
