Juveniles on Poppy Mnt tonight

Last night we sat on the couch and watched a cloud above the mountain light up with a spectacular lightning display while the Chuck-will's-widow sang. It rained another inch then misted all day so when the sun came out this afternoon we drove up on Poppy Mnt to see the birds.

I took photos out the car window as we drove past..not a technique for great photos-mostly less cautious juveniles. Here are few of the better ones

For the moment the entire Poppy Mountain property is a birding spot; we hadn't been up there for months, and the whole place looked semi-abandoned, grown up in grass. We spent the morning hiking one old 4-wheeler trail..got photos of a Cerulean Warbler, among others, but I'll put them on a separate post.

I took advantage of an abandoned pay lake for a nice swim also, and swam across it to take a quick look into a Red-winged Blackbird nest in the reeds. The babies were still tiny and the mother fed them as I swam away.

Thanks! The Hooded Warbler male pulling on the cocoon happened just as I was getting up to shut down my camera and try somewhere else after an hour of waiting..typical! Two days ago when there was a break in the storms we drove up on Poppy Mnt at sunset and got a few pics from the car as we drove around 6-9-09, Poppy Mnt barn, adult male Barn Swallow, 6:15 p.m. Time for a stretch.. Depends on their size. Could be juvenile Orchard Orioles, but if they are tiny, could be Pine Warblers 7-14-09, Poppy Mnt, juvenile Orchard Oriole eating Blackberries From March 2009, Pine Warbler

LOL! You sound like me..every time I see photos better that what my camera can take I want to buy that camera and move to where I can see more exotic birds and warblers. Right now my sights are set on the new Canon EOS 7D-many times better picture, focus, etc- since my little Canon 40D is now obsolete. It was cutting edge, $1400 Feb. of 2008, you can now buy it new for $400. The Canon 7D was released at $1700, but you can already buy it online for $829, free shipping. If I hadn't just paid to get my car fixed, I could have bought it. But I supposed if I wait a little longer the price will keep dropping. I have a lot of time to go birding because the online classes I teach haven't started yet. I also substitute teach in the local schools and help DB compose e letters in his sales business, but more work would mean more money! We do plan to move to Albuquerque to see more exotic birds as soon as DB completes one of the large sales he's been working on, but they've been dragging on and on up until now because of the depressed economy.

After consultation, I've decided the sparrows are only a smaller, lighter subspecies of the large reddish Song Sparrows with double wing bars that are common around here. Too bad..thought they were Lincoln's. But they could have been migrating through anyway
