eggs 3 weeks old--do I take them and the nest?

I am not sure why the eggs stopped developing...it may have been the week of 100+ temps, but the eggs in my BB nest are right at 3 weeks since last egg laid. I need to know if I go ahead and take the nest and the eggs out? I am afraid if she sees me do it, they will choose another spot as if I am "the bad person?" I am at a loss as to what to do...I know she will not kick the eggs out herself....oh...I am sure the eggs are NOT viable as one fell out when I opened the door and the chick was dead confirming my supicions. Unfortunately, I was on vacation last week when they should have hatched, but I don't know what I could have done anyway...

OOOHHH dear, I was going to suggest candeling them....however if memory serves (witch it usually dosent) there was a report of eggs hatching on day 23. I would give it another day or two but not expect much. I dont remember wether taking the nest out is covered on sialis in this situation or not. I would think taking the eggs out would cause her to want to renest, do you have another box as an option for her? I would opt to leave the nest and have another box available. Do you normally get 3 nestings a year? Im sorry I should know this as long as we have both been on here but I have that CRS syndrome! LOL

I have personally seen one egg hatch on the 21st day (nest cam) but that is very unusual. There were 3 in that nest and only the one hatched.

Diane, just to be on the safe side I'd probably leave them another day or two but it's probably unlikely they'll hatch. I'm sure that extreme cold or heat can be a factor in a failed nesting.

I understand how you feel, not wanting to be the "bad guy" by removing her eggs but they do forgive and forget quickly and buy cleaning out this one, she might have another go at it. I think I'd remove the eggs but leave the nest.

Lisa, I also suffer from CRS! On a daily basis! :D

If Daisy is broody, then Carrie is the layer. I would separate them. That way you will know all eggs are being incubated properly and she won't push out hatching eggs and take the new fresh -but unvaiable eggs. Most likely if she pushes one out you can candle it and tell if it is viable and if so just put it back, sometimes they just don't realize they have pushed some out from the bunch. But sometimes they may know something we don't--that the egg is bad and she doesn't want it to ruin her nest.

I've been beaten to the punch,lol, but I'll name an experience. I had eggs that didn't hatch during the 12-14 day period. 2 days later still nothing, and I thought they were goners. Sure enough, I open that box to find new, healthy, hatched bluebirds! I'd give it a little time. The birds may eventually figure it out too. If they abandon or re-lay, I'd examine the old eggs to find out what was wrong with them. ~Tim~

Ken there is no reason for them to be at the box until all the eggs are laid and the mother is ready to sit on them and keep them warm. In hot weather she will sit on them less; sometimes she will rest on the edge of the nest and just stay with the eggs even though they don't need her warmth. I have a camera in the nestbox so I have observed this. My experience has been that once they start laying the mother lays one egg each day every day until she is finished. I have never known there to be gaps between laying. Do you know exactly when the eggs were laid? There should be one new egg every day.

Carolyn--glad to hear from you and yes this weather is doing a number on nests, birds and people. Guess you have heard about all the flooding in Minot. It has been so interesting driving there. I have had to go in twice a week for therapy on my back after slipping early March on ice. NOT FUN!! Anyway, I think I too have lost a nest from a Robin, but not sure it is crows or a neighbors cat. Dumb bird just would not stay on the nest and keep quiet. It is a wonder that any Robins make it. I don't have the houses out that you due, even though son in law said I could. He has been so busy with DD getting chemo treatments, his work in the city, late snows etc. Oh well, there is always next year. We just barely got the garden in. Thanks for keeping us updated.
