become much more attentive to Mama blue when the hatch date gets near?....I see him around much more than I used to and he's also feeding her lots more now....I guesstimate the hatch date between the 13th and 16th...cant wait till they hatch !!!!

Have 4 EABL eggs that should hatch this weekend. Up until now, I haven't seen much of the male, either. Actually, I was worried something happened to him but now, I see them together more.

Linda....Thanks for your reply.....this is my very first year to host BB's....so i know next to nothing about their behavior.....i'm very happy i have them here.....my last nest of martins fledged yesterday so these BB's will help me get through my purple martin withdrawals.....i just hope i can convince them to stay here year round.....

I have a Big Daddy, which was not much for 8 or so years, except this spring. Blue Angel seems to be a fast grower, I have two of those. I just bought a Blue Mammoth, in a pot with several eyes so I do not have to wait so long. The Hosta Library states : "...The foliage mound reaches a generous 54 x 48", and the plant is a rapid grower. The pale lavender flowers bloom early and it is considered to be floriferous. Van Wade recommends 35% shade but says the plant will accept as much as 85% sun. The leaves are a light blue, cordate, and have excellent substance. "Nearly" slug-proof. " I can not wait for a 36 to 48 inch tall powder blue mount of Blue Mammoth. Pictures in the Hosta Library show no stems, seems to be a winner. deedee, if you've used a bleach solution on the inside of the nestbox then it is important to let the box air dry before closing it back up. I only do the bleaching at the end of nesting season and if there's been an unexplained loss of a nestling or adult bird that could be attributed to disease. Otherwise, my nestboxes get a good brushing out and a renewed application of vaseline on the inside of the roof to protect against wasp nests and then are ready for the next round. Oooh exciting Donna! Hope they stick around for awhile! My Blue family left over a week ago, not to return. However yesterday I had a female blue eating out of my mealworm feeder. I do not think it is from the family we had here this summer, they always came in as a family. I am starting to think it is the female from last summer. She is with a male and they are vigourously going in and out of nestboxes and I have only seen the female come up and eat, not the male. Last years female lost her mate at the end of the season before they left for the winter. At least now some of my waxworms are getting eaten since I bought 500 just before my family left. Last years family (only one surviving fledgling) would come and eat the waxworms only and leave the mealworms. This one at first ate mealworms since I had taken the waxworms out but as soon as I saw her I put out more waxworms and she is now eating the waxworms and not touching the mealworms at all. My family from this summer would usually eat some of each when they visited the feeder. So anyway, I am with you having fun watching a bluebird pair, not knowing really for sure if they have been here before or not. Donna

Brenda and Linda,
Make sure that you have some meal worms on hand and a feeding station away from the predators where you can place meal worms to help Mama and Papa Bluebirds when it come time to feed the babies.That way, they will be around more and it will be safer for the babies as well.

Michelle, I paid dearly for 4 thousand live mealworms that at least 4 pair of blues have totally ignored. Took some to work for a coworker, some to my sister for her pair and for my two sets-ALL totally ignored. I set up a special feeder two weeks ago so it can't be that they aren't used to it.

I sit and wait, binocs in hand-no go. Figure when there are hungry nestlings, mom and pop may change their minds. Other than that, I will freeze the mealies and add them to the crumble I make this winter.

Fickle buggers these blues. LOL

Michelle....we have a local bait shop that sells mealworms for bream bait....i'll go tomorrow to get some before i purchase bunches of them to see how it works out....i've read on here that feeding them mealworms helps them get used to people being around.....right now, every time i get near them they fly away.... :(....thanks for the advice !!!...just today my hubby told me he thought he was gonna have me all to himself now that the martins are gone.....but ohhhhhh noooooo.....here come the bluebirds.......lol....

I've got the same problem, they won't touch the meal worms, the third batch of babies started hatching today, so maybe I try putting them out again. Hopefully will see the papa more in the future, Mostly all is see is the female, and not one fledging from the last two batches, I hope they lived, they are probably a half a mile away at the creek.
