Sammy I was actually thinking the praying mantis. You can get praying mantis egg sacks. Each comes with 200 eggs. And because praying mantises can't fly they stay in your garden. The downside is that I fear they will snatch ladybugs and the bees, but the sad part is that all the bees, even the native ones have been missing since mid-July. The only ladybug I saw was in May. All I get are these nasty flies, thrips and the cucumber beetles visiting. All a sad reminder how important it is to protect our bees from Sevin. Anyway I think a praying mantis would be terrific in my situation. Hopefully the birds won't find the mantis but I think 200 eggs and its camouflage are good odds for it. I am lucky in that my flowers still look very pretty and I only get a few sprinkling of holes in some. But one never knows with insects and fungus, sometimes they just suddenly infest out-of-the-blue. I am sure the praying mantis will be very happy with the thrips and the houseflies that keep visiting my fragrant roses (ugggh, shudder!). Flies are another one of my most hated insects because they're filthy scavengers, which is why I always curb my dog. I hate! flies and that's my ultimate prissiness speaking.

thanks for all the suggestions. i've tried virtually every molding and wood business in san diego, and they've tried to match with existing stock with no luck. i need about 50', so i guess i'll go the woodworker custom route. it's just frustrating that i see people rennovating 50's houses around here, that upgrade and throw out the old molding, but i can't seem to hook up with them before they do it. we're keeping an eye on the foreclosed homes in our area and as the new wave of buyers come in, checking their plans for the old floors, so maybe we'll still luck out.

Your kitchen is very pretty and you certainly have a large run of new counter surface material. Hmmm. Matching it as close to what you could with the same granite would be my choice in looking at your pictures. Like you said it isn't butting up against each other. It is across and I think I would rather have as close to the same material to have the same flow going. I had said wood before but you have a long run there and I'm thinking matching the granite would be what I would do. Your kitchen is pretty and I'm sure it will work out whatever you pick. Several solutions for you. Buy a dual medicine cabinet to replace the mirror you have above the vanity. Although this one (Medicine Cabinet) is a little on the expensive side, you could probably have a local cabinet guy make you a frame with mirrored doors to cover two recessed shelves inside the wall cavity. You could buy a (Picture Frame covered) recessed medicine cabinet. So until its opened it will look like a flush mount Artwork. That's what I am doing in my guest bath because I hate the look of medicine chests, but they do serve a purpose. I am having my handyman put European hinges onto a frame that he will attach to recessed wall shelves. Then I can have the size I want for the art and the shelving. If you search Pinterest you will find many who have built their own Art Concealing Medicine Chest. You don't have to locate a cabinet next to the vanity. You can utilize the space between the studs to make a long in the wall cabinet that can house Beauty and Paper Products, small hand towels, washcloths, etc. These long narrow cabinets can work along side the shower or behind the bathroom door. Behind the toilet tank is a great place to hang the toilet bowl brush when dry. You just mount a Command Hook to the back of the toilet. The brush is then handy and out of sight and easily accessible. You should also have a back splash behind the granite to protect the drywall. If you contact a granite fabricator, they always have remnants for way less. In my bath I am installing a tall back splash with narrow shelf and end brackets like this: Back splash Shelf . OR You could also mount a wood floating shelf above the back splash too, but I would matching your granite under it. You would be amazed how convenient having this shelf can be for things like tissues, razors, small bottles, perfume, while getting ready, etc. Be sure the outlet is a GFI outlet since its near water. Think about another outlet at the other end of the vanity. A really nice short thin Towel Rod for Hand Towel mounted on side of vanity.
