Hope to still see an Eastern Bluebird in my lifetime...

Beautiful -- I'd love to see one in my lifetime. We have lots of bluebirds here, take a trip to TN!

I've lived in Mobile for 50+ years and I saw my first blue bunting a couple of months ago in my brother's courtyard in downtown Mobile. My heart nearly stopped! I called everyone out of the their offices to see it before it flew away, but bro missed it because he was at the courthouse doing his thing. He still regrets missing the sighting. I've never been down to Dauphin Island during the migrations but after seeing that fella and a scarlet tananger (sp?) a couple of weeks later, also in bro's courtyard, it's tempting. When we see birds like that I believe it highlights the fact that we need to protect their habitats and provide all animals with a rich environment for them to prosper. I don't think we're doing a very good job in my area of encouraging responsible development. Mobile used to be populated with lots of trees. No more. :(

Had a huge spotted owl fly over me yesterday while on the lake at Loud Thunder Forest preserve in Andalusia, Illinois. So far in the city at my birdfeeder I've had the usual: lots of sparrows, grackels, a few cardinals, my daily frequenting Blue Jays;...but a few weeks back I had two more unusual visitors: (1) White-Breasted Nuthatch and (2) Red-Bellied Woodpecker. The nuthatch was awesome. I was sitting watching the feeder when I saw this little bluish bird running DOWN the trunk of my tree and it kept doing that. At the time I didn't know what it was. According to the map shown in the Peterson Field Guide to the birds of North Am., East of the Rockies (exact title?), it can inhabit, during the nesting season, the whole of your State. I have never had one of these in my yard and sure wished I did! Here in S-W Quebec, they can be seen in shrubby fields, like around power lines, or at the edge of regenerating woods and (sugar maple) forests.

I had an Indigo Bunting, once. It was the same year I had Baltimore Orioles. I haven't had either since. My parents had Indigo Buntings last year. Quite a few of them too!
That's what I was going to say about the Bluebirds..go to TN. They were all around us down there, but we didn't live there long enough for me to get them onto our property.

wonderful picture! we have quite a few indigos here. they used to come and stay just for a few days but now, they are here pretty much all summer. one of my very favorites!

Terrific photo wendy!! Congrats to you!! I would sure love to see one of those blue birds at my feeders. Like deanie, I have Eastern Bluebirds in my yard all the time here in NW GA. I almost never get to see an Indigo Bunting.
