Do you ever wonder what you did with out a camera

We have camera's in both of our wood duck boxes. Each has a second nesting in them. Many more eggs in each box than one hen could lay. The one box that has a sitting hen has 27 eggs-poor duck has no room for her feet. At least 5 of those eggs have been laid in the nest since she started sitting full time.

The other box has 13 eggs, anywhere from 1 egg to 4 eggs have been added to that box on a daily bases. Lots of hen fighting in the box. They are very feisty birds.

One came and sat all night last night, but was only around today to lay an egg. (actually 3 eggs were laid)

When it is cold the hens will sometimes come and sit at night, like they are trying to keep eggs from freezing.

Now I wonder if they sit at night to keep the eggs as warm as the box does during the day. I checked temp today.

The sitting box was 102 when I opened it.

The none sitting box was 95 and the eggs were 85 (like the down that the mama duck put in keeps them insulated both directions (cold or hot).

And our blue birds are building a nest in their box also.

This a first nest in our yard this year.

OH my , do most of the eggs hatch? Are other Ducks dumping eggs? I know nothing about wood ducks but I do have a box. It was a gift and it is mounted near my pond out here in the woods but I have never seen a wood duck. Do the Hens share a box and take turns sitting? When they hatch and jump out are all the hens there or just one poor mama bird?
I can tell you tons about Blue Birds!

It is amazing how many of the eggs do hatch.
The last batch had 22 eggs and 19 of them hatched.
Only one duck stays till the end and is the only mama.
The others are fought with and generally give up after they lay their eggs or they find a new nest for part of the eggs.
The one nest we have now had 27 eggs and I am sure there is at least one more in it. I did not go and count eggs today as we had grandkids all day.
Where are you located. We have so many wood ducks and I am sure part of it is because of the boxes. They say the female will come back to the area that she was hatched in.
I keep telling my hubby we need more boxes, but he says no, he will not ring the pond with duck boxes.

I've pressed many little flower blossoms over the years. I just use a thick telephone directory or similar book. Look for blooms that are more 2-dimensional rather than 3-dimensional... a pansy rather than a chrysanthemum, for example. Obviously a rose won't press flat! And avoid ones with thick centers like some daisies. If you want the daisy petals, pull them off individually to dry them, then reassemble for your project. You can use a piece of paper for the center. Do the same with other thick or complicated blooms - disassemble them and press the individual parts. Some dried flowers retain their colors well, others fade over time. And some dry to a different color... for example, some white blooms dry to a funky tan or yellow. You'll discover which suit your needs by trial and error. Be sure to press weeds and grasses, too. And four-leaf clovers! They add shape interest and color contrast to your compositions. Just go ahead and try drying some... it doesn't take much time or space. If you use a big book like a telephone directory, just start in the back, then as you discover more flowers to press, you can put them in the book closer to the top as you go. Just leave a few pages between each pressing so the moisture doesn't move to another batch. Pretty soon you'll have lots of pressed material to work with!

Aluminum cooking utensils, aluminum foil and pots and pans do not cause Alzheimer's Disease. Tami, if Alzheimer's Disease runs in your family there is most likely a genetic link. From the day my Mom was diagnosed I have read anything and everything I could get my hands on about Alzheimer's Disease (one of the reasons I got the internet) and there is nothing that links aluminum from cooking utensils as a cause. If you are worried about ingesting aluminum stop drinking water, stop taking Tylenol, stop taking antacids and stop drinking tea or even wearing antiperspirants. Here is link to a Government of Canada website in regards to aluminum and human health. In my research and book reading on Alzheimer's Disease the first comment ever made linking aluminum from cooking utensils and foil was by researcher/scientist telling a joke at a cocktail party - somebody overheard the words "aluminum foil" and "Alzheimer's" and the word was spread that aluminum pots and pans cause Alzheimer's Disease. I swear at my cats a lot, especially when my male starts fighting with my elderly, arthritic female who can't really fight back. Can't tell you what I yell -- won't make it past the filters here ;) (no worries -- the cat just looks at me in return, with this look of "Oh yeah? Piss off." My yelling has little effect on his behavior, though he usually does stop fighting with the female for a little while.) If you go out digging in your yard, in late spring you will likely find "glowworms". These are the larvae of fireflies and have a glow on their tail ends too. Connie I am in west Michigan at the edge of the Manistee National Forest. There are many lakes in this area, around here there must be one nice lake every 5-10 miles in any direction you drive (2 within walking distance from me) and we are about 15 miles from Lake Michigan. SO we have hundreds of miles of woods and plenty of water. No wood ducks. : ( Will they take a natural cavity over a provided box? That would explaine much!
