This is the second time in as many weeks I found a nest box full of dead chicks that were maybe a few days from fledging. A total of 12 healthy, vocal, bubbly & fully developed featherd birds at last check 7 days prior. I thought perhaps inexperienced parents but surely not 2 in a row. In both cases I noticed what I thought was dust in & around the hole & sides. This turned out to be some sort of microscopic mites that made me itch like crazy when they got on me. There were literally 1000's of these little red & black specks all over the insides of the box & nest. Could these have driven the parents off & leaving the birds to starve a few days from fledging? I am so Bummed about this. Is there anything that might prevent this from re-occuring?
Thanks for any advice.
