My Bluebirds Fledged.

My bluebirds fledged today and of course I was at work. I knew it was going to be soon as the babies were sticking their heads out of the entrance all weekend. A few questions.

1. The last couple of weeks the mother would exit the nest with a big glob of something white in her beak, is that there poop ?

2. Will the babies and parents continue to use the nestbox ?

3. Should I remove the nest or leave it in the box ?

4. Will the family stay in the area because I haven't seen them around tonight ? I did check the inside and it's vacant.

Here's a pic of momma that I took yesterday and if you look closely you can see a baby in the entrance.

Yes, that white blob was a fecal sack. They will not continue to use the nest box (though they may come back for a second nesting) so it is a good time to clean it out. Do remove the old nest because it could be crawling with all sorts of things and also because if they build on top of it, they will be too close to the entrance and some avian predator could grab them through the hole. From my experience, they tend to take off for a while, though you may hear the babies begging for food in the trees. If you feed them, they will probably come back in a week or so with their young and teach them to eat from the feeder.

Congrats, and I agree with everything that Kendra just said. They will disappear for a bit, and then one day you might look up and see them in the yard. The babies have the speckled chests and are easy to spot. I do clean out the old nests as soon as the babies fledge. Then, your box is ready for another go round!~~Angie

Sorry to hear the bad news,I also lost at least 3 in one box,and all 5 in another box,and lost 6 chickadee nestlings, all were due to fledge. about 1-1/2 weeks ago,we also had cooler temps.and lots of rain that week.I am thinking it was in fact the weather also.You did everything right,all we can do is try.You have cleaned the box,they should renest within a week or so.If you don't have other boxes available,now might be a good time to add one.I like to have more then one box to choose from,and it doubles your fun and stress LOL! I am still new at this whole protecting our bb houses, I have learned the hard way twice and now IM coming here for some great advice, which I am getting and you will also. I thought someone told me that if you clean the bb nest out after fledging to leave it open for awhile. Mama bb will be busy with her baby's. IM not really sure but I do think this was suggested to me? If not someone will set you straight soon. Congrats on the six fledglings, that is huge!! After watching video of wrens and sparrows raiding and killing bb's IM pissed and ready to rip their little heads off. (oh my) LOL good luck.

Linda, I think a hawk would have gotten more than a wing. That sounds like it's possibly a cat attack. Whatever, I'm sorry. We know that the odds of a bluebird fledgling making it for a full year are slim and that's why they nest as often as 3, even 4 times in some areas, a year, but it's always sad witness one who has died. I've found baby dees buried deep in a nest when I cleaned out the box and figured that they were too large for the adults to remove when they died. Two fledged and two were buried. Needless to say I have no idea why two died and two made it.

2 of the babies from our last clutch are still hanging around. They will beg, but I haven't observed the parents feeding them anymore. Interesting thing happened yesterday. There are 4 new eggs which the female is incubating. I observed one of the fledglings enter the box, and he/she never came out! It was late afternoon...quite warm...Was he snuggling with the female? couldnt guess. I will add that during a very cold spell in the winter, every evening 5 bluebirds would arrive and crowd into the house. In the morning, they would fly out, one by one, wake up a little, then fly off. But every evening, they would arrive, one by one, and go back into their "bedroom " together!

I removed the nest from the box tonight and cleaned out the box, maybe I'll get lucky for another go round. Thanks.
