Active babies no sign of parents

I've got 5 active chicks who are sticking their beaks out the birdhouse hole for food, but I havne't seen the parents today. Should I use tweezers and give them some meal worms?

Tim, do you know how old they are?

If they are peaking out for food, and there's no parents, they could be just about to fledge!

Look and listen for the parents singing or calling nearby. If they are of age, this is a dead giveaway that they're leaving.

However I had parents BOTH disappear this season and the 5 young prematurely fledged, probably out of hunger. I had to take them to a rehabber. So try to see if the parents are anywhere nearby. They can be obvious when they try to get the young to come out of the box.

I'd guess they are approaching 3 weeks old. The parents used to sit on the roof of the neighbors house and have a clear view of the house opening, or in the trees above the house, but I haven't seen them. Today the chicks have been very quiet and sleeping all day. Still no sign of a parent.It doesn't look like the baby eyes are open yet, but their mouths certainly are with big yawns for food when I tap the side of the house.

Great pictures and great maps! Heidi, don't worry - unlike algebra - there won't be a test on the maps. We appreciate you doing them. It's making the month a lot more fun and you have a new addition to the maps with the GardenWeb names included on them. Love it! It seems I have lots of appointments scheduled this week so sorry if I don't drop in soon after you post. Today one of the garden groups that I belong to had a meeting and luncheon out of town so between the meeting, lunch, and travel - lots of my day was gone... not to mention I did a bit of snoozing in front of the TV when I got home! Lunch was so delicious though - it was worth the drive. Our speaker talked about roses and when I got home I walked around to check on my plants ... and yes, I had my first rose blossom of the year! Here in Central WI, I have two pairs of Blues on their second nesting, they are both incubating at the moment. One nesting should be hatching by this wednesday and the other about five days later, both have four eggs. Not sure if any would just be starting a second nesting this late now though. The one pair started the second nest within days of fledging the first brood. The other pair waited over two weeks! This is only my fourth year hosting/monitoring Bluebirds and I have always had them bring the babies back and keep eating the mealworms I offered until they left in Oct/November. Not sure if they all stay at the feeders though, I think it greatly depends on where you live if the Blues migrate from your area in the Fall or not. Donna

"I would love this child to be a boy and this boy becomes a man who becomes an excellent and holy Catholic priest." Like the kid doesn't already have enough to deal with? Why wouldn't you wish for the child to be a girl? How about praying that the child becomes an excellent human being? Or if Christian ministry is what you consider the best end result, how about praying that the child becomes an excellent and holy minister - regardless of whether the child is male or female? I think the parents are kinda wacko, and certainly this little game will end as soon as the child is old enough to interact with others outside the family, to learn about his/her body parts as a toddler, etc. Sending the message that gender is the problem is misrepresenting the truth.

What an interesting article Susan. It does make sense that a very lay back child "might" not get the lessons and examples given by their parents as well as a higher strung child. People in the workforce are like that in a way. The lay back, easy going..."whatever" kind of employee takes longer to understand the dynamic of schedules/timelines/budget constraints/strong work ethics/...than the worker that seems more in tuned with the business at hand, the goal and vision of the business/how they fit and what they can do to make it successful... Anyway, probably not a good example but using the same theory it kind of makes sense to me. Thanks for sharing...I enjoyed reading the piece. ~Susan

If they are near 3 weeks old their eyes are open and they should be ready to leave. Can you get a better idea of their age? If they are really 3 weeks and there are no parents your going to need to act. I would start calling rehabbers right away. It is very uncommon to lose both parents.

Do you have them trained to come for mealworms? My BB parents never miss a meal so far, so if you put worms out they don't come quickly, maybe something did happen to them.

I had to clean out the nest yesterday and all 5 were dead. I had left mealworms for the parents on the baffle and they never returned.
