Hi! A couple weeks ago we noticed 2 Carolina wrens building their nest in our fern right outside of our kitchen window. We were so excited! Then a few days ago we no longer saw them around and sadly thought that they had abandoned their nest. This morning we were talking about removing the nest from the fern and when I peeked, I saw 5 eggs! Now we are concerned if they have abandoned their eggs :( Is this possible? We haven't seen them around at all. What time of the day do they incubate? Would it be possible that we are missing their timing? We are not morning risers. Agh! I'd be so sad if by any chance we scared them away :( We have been very respectful, however sometimes we would open the window. I do not know how long the eggs have been there. I thought that as soon as they were close to being done building their nest, they had left. Do they first build and then lay their eggs? Thank you so much!

I am no expert, but most birds feed nestlings whole bugs and worms. When I have Carolina Wrens nesting in the area, I provide meal worms for them and they shove them in the babies as fast as I put them out. My blue birds also feed them whole to thier babies. The white sacs that you see are fecal sacs. After the babies are well fed, they will "poop", it is contained in a sac, easy for the parents to carry off far from the nest so that no preditors find the nest and the nest stays clean also. Carolina Wrens are so much fun to watch. They usually have two to three broods a season here, maybe you will be lucky to see them nest again!

For about 5 years there were a pair of Carolina Wrens who built a nest on our screen porch inside a grocery bag filled with other grocery bags that hung on a hook outside the kitchen door. The little rascals squeezed under the screen door through a space so small that until I saw one of them do it I would have said it was impossible. And each year when the nestlings fledged and left the nest there were always at least two of them who couldn't follow their parents under the door. My wife or I would have to leave the door hooked open so they could leave. Once it took three days for one chick to figure it out, even with its parents repeatedly coming in to lead it from captivity.

My daughter had a Carolina Wren nest (with eggs) in a precarious location. It was in a flower pot. We moved it a few feet every day until it was in a safe spot. The wren had no problem finding the nest each day, and continued to incubate the eggs. The result was a total success.
