I am really confused???

About a week before memorial day I had some bbs making a nest in my bb house. On memorial day she laid the first egg and then for the next two days she laid 2 more. After the eggs were laid I did not see my blues for about a week. Then at the first of this week I noticed that they were back at the house, so I left everything alone. I thought that the female was inside the house sitting on the eggs. Instead, they are making a new nest on top of the 3 eggs that are in there. Now what is going on and what am I suppose to do. There are 3 eggs under the new pinestraw that they are putting in the house. What will happen to the eggs that are already in the house? Should I leave them in there? If they are fertile they should be almost ready to hatch. OK everybody you are going to have to help me with this one, cause I have never had this to happen before.

Remove the eggs that are under the new pine straw. Don't know what happened but for one reason or the other those first three eggs are a failed clutch.

Dont just remove the eggs, remove the first nest and the eggs. KEEP the first nest in a ziplock or tupperware, it is clean...you may need it in the future. If she builds one nest on top of another she will have the babies a little too high for safety. Glad they came back! Oh also check the box to be sure there are no bees, wasps or ants.

Go for it. For me, here in Columbus, I wait on zins and mgs because of my conditions. Others have no problems. What you have to consider is the ease of the germination and then the sensitivity to subsequent cold temps. Many annuals have no problem with this, but mgs in particular seem to be sensitive.

Answers below... Does it need a clear top ? yes, light is required for the cutting to make food for the new roots, however I don't use a top on my "cloner" as there is enough ambient moisture from small leaks etc. Â Does the water need some type of nutrient ? not really Â Does the water need to be kept warm ? it can help, depends on the type of cutting - if the plant likes warm temps, then it will like warm water...An aquarium heater can be useful in a cloner - I use one to keep the water above 60 degrees in the winter. Â Do the misting nozzles stop up easy ? Yes, even mini sprayers can clog as algae etc. build up, The finer the mist, the more likely the clogging. I have added an aquarium filter on the pump which drives my spray heads in my cloner. There are also misters for keeping the leaves from drying out (used when rooting in soil mix with cuttings which are hard to root), those systems usually use high (water line) pressure with a good filter and a timer. Â Will a fish pond pump create enough pressure for the nozzles to produce spray ? Probably too much, the cloner I have uses a pump similar to wall fountain. The spray should not be blasting the cuttings - just enough to dampen them. Â If I get some roots on the plants, do I plant them in dirt ? The new roots are susceptible to rot so you will have better luck with sterile potting type soil with extra perlite added. Chad

Replacing an Oil Furnace... Still have some confusion...

dandm2007... My old Magic Chef oil furnace cracked a heat exchanger last year. There was a mild odor in the house when it ran - kinda like kerosene. Sometimes, the CO detector would give a warning beep-beep-beep - although it never went on to the constant BRAAAAAP, which means "get out now!" I didn't have a smoke bomb, so I removed the supply plenum and with a flashlight I found an 8 cm crack on the heat exchanger. It was on the weld between the "inner drum" and "outer ring" (ptimary and secondary exchanger?). It was not easy to spot. The supply plenum - and the ductwork closest to it - had light coat of soot on the inside. It was most noticeable on the joints and elbows. That was the exhaust leaking by the crack. I've dark-coloured log walls. So I couldn't see soot above the registers. Light-coloured walls may have shown some sooting. A properly running oil furnace should emit no odor. I can't smell my furnace at all inside or outside the house. There is NO visible smoke from the chimney. On really cold days I'll see some water vapour, but that's it. Unfortunately, when I first put in the replacement furnace there was an even stronger kero odor from the vents. That was all my fault. During my DIY install, the edge of the exhaust duct slipped under the collar on the back of the furnace. This allowed exhaust gases to get sucked into the return plenum, then right out the supply. It took me a day to figure out I had botched it. Oddly enough, the CO detector never made a peep. Is it possible that the vibration from a faulty power exhaust fan wiggled your exhaust duct past the collar? If your furnace pre-heats the return air over an internal exhaust tube like my Crown does, then you'd get the same kerosene odor that I did. I'm sure your CO levels would go up, as well. A wobbling exhaust fan could have also loosened your chimney. *** CALLING HAVAC and OTHER PROS *** Does dandm's horizontal furnace pre-heat the return like my Crown lowboy? If so, could it be sucking in fumes because the exhaust duct slipped behind the collar on the furnace?? Finally...could fan vibration loosen the collar or move the exhaust in that way? Peace. Marco

I did a little shopping. I'm a contractor but a big Ebay fan as well. Try this link and see if this will help HERE. This is a nice Carrier thermidistat. I'm not familiar with this particular model but service systems that use this series and they're great. Also, if you have trouble replacing the thermostat, I have step by step instructions on my DIY blog, HERE. Replacing a thermostat is a snap as long as the contractor that installed the last one used a standard wiring protocol. You may already know this, but: R - Red. This is the switching leg of the low voltage controls Y - Yellow. This is the cooling input. If there is a Y1 and Y2, this is for first and second stage cooling G - Green. Fan wire W - White. Heat O or Bl - Orange or Blue. This is for the reversing valve. Most manufacturers use O, meaning the reversing valve is energized in cooling mode. Rheem/Rhudd is an exception. Bl - Blue. Usually this is common but not always Check out the step by step instructions on the link above. It's really easy. Also, hope the link to ebay helps. This one is $150, not bad.

So I really need to remove the eggs and old nest? You do not think that the eggs were fertile? What if I left a small amount of the straw in the box from the old nest would that be ok? I sure hate to take the eggs out, but if you guys think that this is whats best I will. One more stupid question. What would happen to these eggs if they were left in the house? Like I said I have never been through this before. You guys are going to have to help me get through this. Its funny, you can become attached to eggs like they were your own babies.

Are you sure this is the same female? Something may have happened to the first female. The male may have found another female and she's building a new nest.

Indigo, you can remove the old nest under the new one being made, 2 nests are to close to the hole. Do you know how to candel eggs? I don't think your 3 are vialable, but it is worth a try I guess. If the female was not on them I really dont think they will hatch. Get a plastic spoon, and a strong flashlight. Pick up the eggs (with the spoon) and shine the flashlight through them. If there is a big mass you may want to try puttng them in the current nest...if they are clear discard them far from the nest.

The eggs and nest if left there would probably just sit in there intact. People have found a complete nest and eggs under the used nest when they clean out the box or even just one egg that didn't hatch. I wouldn't put the eggs back in the current nest. If she lays more eggs they would not be on the same time table. After a week I don't think they are viable anyway. I know it's hard to see all that work go to waste but we can't control everything.
