2nd Nest Fledglings - Photos

Hi all,

The fledglings from our 2nd nesting have gradually been coming nearer over the past 5 days. We've shot them from afar ever since they left the box, but we're just now starting to get close enuf for some better photos.

We ran out of mealworms several days ago, but Missy and Mr.B are still coming for nuggets, and feeding them to the new brood. Hopefully we'll get some nice closeups on the deck soon.

Sounds like you really have some challenges. You have my sympathies! A tiny poked hole is more likely a house wren's thin sharp beak, sometimes taking them some distance away, or simply tossing them out. The house sparrow will toss the eggs out, but their finch-like beak would not as likely make a tiny poke hole. And the HOSP is more likely to stick around, harass, or even take over the cavity. "Do BB's destroy their own eggs" ... No "the nest possibly could have been flooded?" ... are there leaks that could be fixed? "Are the HOSP really sneaky" ... yes, but HOWR are sneakier ... "and resistant to the Sparrow Spooker?" ... yes, and house wrens will not be deterred by a sparrow spooker. House Wrens are even sneakier, faster and silent, leaving no evidence behind, only destroying eggs or young. You might hear them singing, but might never, ever see them! Thanks for the replies! The thing is, there HAS been a nestbox available both years. Last year it was on a pole (and I've got an extra baffle for the pole if necessary), and this year I've used it as a HOSP trap and mounted it on the house and then on a tree. The blues have never shown any interest in the nest box, where ever it was. Never even seen them go in or sit on it. They nested their first brood last year in another snag that had a hole about 20 feet up, but that snag fell over last summer so they moved to the one they like now. The only birds showing interest in the nest box have been the HOSPs (trapped 1 last year, 2 this year with the Van ert) and some HOWRs last year after which I removed their sticks and left the box open. Fortunately this year the HOSPs have since stayed away more or less and no sign of any HOWRs. X my fingers they stay away. I speculate that perhaps these birds were raised in natural cavities and that is what they're most comfortable with? There must be some way to baffle the tree?

Yes there are a few people that still visit this site. I check it from time to time, but it's very inactive compared to the bluebird nut cafe, and that can be a bad thing if you have an emergency and need help quickly. I am not a moderator there but I do check in almost every day. I wish we could get everyone on the same site lol.

Hi Donna and Congrats on both your 1st-nesters staying and your 2nd nest underway! That's a real sweet photo. :) Our 3rd-nesters should fledge this week-end and we do have fledglings from both previous nests helping to feed them in the box. It's a real treat! Kenn, these last shots are awesome. You must have been pretty close to them too, great feather detail!! Love that last shot!!

Hey, I put Bluebird nuggets out today along with mealworms and I think the Blues thought I was nuts or something. LOL! You are lucky yours will eat that stuff, mine won't.

Donna - I think the nuggets may be an "acquired taste". Ours didn't take to them at first either. But over time they've all become rather fond of them... coming thruout the day for them. Even when there are mealies available they'll have a nugget instead on occasion.

And they do feed them to the fledglings also:

Oh my gosh!!! The mad baby blue picture is priceless. I can't stop looking at it. That picture is the best I have seen. Just adorable!!!

Thanks everyone,

We are so delighted to see so many fledglings up close everyday now. Here are just few more taken in recent days.

This little one sits atop the nestbox (which contains 5 more eggs in Missy's 3rd nest), and calls to Mom who's perched on the spooker:

This one is on the deck rail waiting for a spot to open up at the mealworm bowl:

And for those of you who liked the "mad bluebird" shot, here's another wet fledgling up close:

We're about 5 days away from the hatching of clutch #3, but we're still seeing all 8 of the fledges from the first two nests.
