Sometimes it is a very hard decision on what to do to a sick beloved bulb. I have learned to put aside my feelings and then decide on the situation. When I have bulbs like this, I first check the center... the HEART of the bulb. If it has a rot that has damaged the center, then it is time to cut it up and try to just produce bulblets out of the mother bulb. Or treat the center rot and let the mother bulbs produce bulblets on it's own. This is what I did to my beloved Papilio I. I just let her be and she has produced at least 15 bulblets. Papilio I is gone now but I have a potful of bulblets in it's memory. If the center is ok, then I would clean it up really good and plant it. If the basal plate is thick, I REJUVINATE the bulb. Slice off the basal plate leaving like just 1/2 inch of it. This would take away the old roots but give the bulb a better chance to produce MORE and NEW roots. Thick basal plates get too tough that it hinders root growth. Places where old roots emerged usually won't produce new roots anymore. New roots will emerge from other points in the basal plate. Rejuvinating bulbs is done by commercial growers to older bulbs when they are already slackening in their performance. I then paint all of the cuts/wounds with Captan paste, let dry for 2-3 days and plant like you will with a newly purchased bulb. The decision is yours "daddy". Whatever action you take on your "baby" always remember this...It has lived a good life with a purpose. To teach you and give you knowledge. Learn from it... Good luck!

I don't have any blue eyed intros from this year or last. What is your goal for such daylilies? Do you just want to grow a blue-eyed daylily, or do you want it as a hybridizing parent. So many factors affect daylily color. Most of the so-called blue-eyed daylilies look very blue in my hot, humid climate. But they don't look blue in the cooler parts of the U.S. like the Pacific Northwest. Ah ha!! Gotcha : ) Here it is a bit smaller, and then a distant shot of the first, larger one. Now I'm thinking the larger one is fine and has more presence and definition. Maybe in between? I tried some of those curved iron accents I've seen at ending positions or posts (but can't remember the details, so it just shows the general look.) And, ya know, a piece of gray flagstone on top of those columns and even across the wall looks great and ties nicely with the roof and drive. I would think you could fit the moulding piece around the gutter area, hiding it. As a front cap sort of thing. It's a design problem to work out : ) Have to figure any water issues in. Do you have a closeup or drawing of the area, how the pieces and planes are currently fitting together? Should pull a distant shot of the larger size in also.

Well...it all depends on the blue cheese dressing....if it's a standard mayo based one...I like it on greens of course, and chopped vegetable salad of cucumbers, peppers green or colored, chopped sweet onion halved cherry tomatoes, some small pasta like orzo and some crisp greens mixed in. I like a more of a vinaigrette dressing with things like broccoli and cauliflower....and it's lovely on fennel and jicama salad, with some red peppers for color. I also make a very lemony blue cheese dressing....blue cheese mashed upw ith some lemon juice, olive oil and I forget what else....goes well on canned salmon and white meat chicken with lots of celery for crunch. Don't much care for blue cheese dressing on potatoes nor carrots....but I did have a recipe for blue cheese and carrots. I have a recipe for big fat slices of Vidalia onions in a blue cheese oil and vinegar dressing that is lovely....and goes very well with cucumbers too.
