THREE eggs today!!!

Yipee!!! I went out early this morning and did my whistle and fed the meal worms. I was getting ready for Church and so I was running back and forth try to look out the window at the same time.

HERE they came!! flew right in and Dad ate worms while Mom went right in the box!!!

Came home from Church and here are the pics of what we have so far.

I KNOW , I have the box on a fence, but I have put snake away all around, keep it weed eated and check ALL the time.

We dont have any Raccoons or at least I have never seen any.

I was going to put this box on a pole and all, but these birds were already making a nest and just lost their first brood so I really didnt want to make them change AGAIN.

But if you all think I should I will!

I havent had any BAD advice from ya'll yet :)

Yes you really need to put that box on a post if at all possible.You say that you don't have racoons,but Malinda will tell you that she lost her first box of blues to a racoon.The blues are so much safer with the box on a pole and baffled.Don't set yourself up for a heart break.Get it done and enjoy.....Jane

OK so do I get a pole from a bird place or just get one from Home Depot?
How tall does it need to be?
AND (Sorry for all the questions) where do I get a baffle?
I DO NOT want to lose these babies!!
This will not upset the parents if I move the box and all?

OKSandy the Spicebush do take a while, I wonder why? I have had Spicebush cats from the beginning of June! Not the same ones but, a continuing stream of them..I just found three more in the past two days. They will over-winter I bet.. I went on a hike yesterday and finally found Spicebush-all the time I have found the cats on Sassafrass. What a great smell! I knew it was SB the moment I broke the leaf-I put it in the cage with the ones I had and they are eating it up.. I will miss all my little cats when the season ends..I was so happy to find those eggs-that means I'll have cats for just a few more weeks. Aggie

You don't know me, but many hugs to you Debby. I cannot imagine the pain that you endure. I was going to say that I played mediator at work, smoothing co-worker's ruffled feelings. I had a great day seeing my co-workers. My dog had cancer surgery and I spent the past two weeks working from home. I really enjoy the days when I go to the office. I had a great heart to heart talk with my manager. It was a special and rare interaction and I treasured it. It sounds like my whole life is my job :-) I really love what I do for money and for that I am thankful.

I tried three new recipes today...

Sunday is my day to cook, so if Im going to try a new recipe, it is usually on Sunday. Today I made an agrodolce cabbage with sausages (veggie italian ones for me), which was good, but too hot since the recipe called for too many hot pepper flakes, IMHO. Ill make it again but without all the pepper. Then I improvised something I had been wanting to make for a while, macaroni with cheese and butternut squash. I had seen several recipes for it but they all seemed too bland to me. So I made a cheese sauce with a bunch of cheese I had that was going moldy, (I cut off the moldy parts!), added dried mustard, lemon pepper and bouquet garni seasoning to the sauce, plus some of my slow cooker onions, and then mixed in a 1O oz. package of butternut squash puree. Topped with seasoned bread crumbs and baked at 375 for 3O min. If I do it again I will grease the casserole dish and not cook at as high a heat. The sauce made a crust on the bottom of the pan. Not burned, but a little too crunchy for my taste. Otherwise, delish. Another good way to make this might be to grate fresh butternut squash into the dish before baking. I dunno, the frozen squash was dead easy!

aristolochia7 - What zone are you in? I'm surprised you don't have any Giants. Iris S - Thanks. They are extremely lucky they are cute, because sometimes they are terrible brats! Daisy is a beagle, and Milo is a pug mix. Both have their mischevious moments.... It is killing me not to bring these eggs in, but as mentioned upthread, I had bad luck last year doing that. I do notice that she is only laying eggs on new growth. I'm wondering if the fact that last year's eggs were on old growth had something to do with them dying at first instar. I think I will cut the tree back next spring to encourage new growth.

my husband used just a metal post from Lowes or Home Depot.I like my boxes at eye level so that I can monitor them easily.If you go to Bet's Sialis website I am sure you will get all the answers you need.

Remember, raccoons are nocturnal. Unless you stay up all night and watch, you will never know. And they reside in urban, suburban, and city environments. They love to eat eggs and little birds, even adult birds if they can catch them (like reaching into a nestbox). And believe me, there is nothing worse than going out to check on the nest, and finding a wing here, a leg over there, and feathers everywhere, especially knowing you could have prevented it. And if a raccoon can get them, so can cats.
You CAN move the nestbox, carefully, to a safer setup. I have not had to do that, as my setup is already the best I can make it, but others have. Hopefully they will chime in.
