THREE eggs today!!!

Yipee!!! I went out early this morning and did my whistle and fed the meal worms. I was getting ready for Church and so I was running back and forth try to look out the window at the same time.

HERE they came!! flew right in and Dad ate worms while Mom went right in the box!!!

Came home from Church and here are the pics of what we have so far.

I KNOW , I have the box on a fence, but I have put snake away all around, keep it weed eated and check ALL the time.

We dont have any Raccoons or at least I have never seen any.

I was going to put this box on a pole and all, but these birds were already making a nest and just lost their first brood so I really didnt want to make them change AGAIN.

But if you all think I should I will!

I havent had any BAD advice from ya'll yet :)

Yes you really need to put that box on a post if at all possible.You say that you don't have racoons,but Malinda will tell you that she lost her first box of blues to a racoon.The blues are so much safer with the box on a pole and baffled.Don't set yourself up for a heart break.Get it done and enjoy.....Jane

OK so do I get a pole from a bird place or just get one from Home Depot?
How tall does it need to be?
AND (Sorry for all the questions) where do I get a baffle?
I DO NOT want to lose these babies!!
This will not upset the parents if I move the box and all?

Hi!! new to posting here, but I am sharing your frustration over GSTs. I just ordered 3 more from Shady Oaks, and two bit it by the time I got up this morning. I thought maybe a tiny spider was getting the one itty bitty, but I couldnt see too well, but it may have been another cat I saw balled up over him. Thinking it was a spider, I swatted it away. So I have one lone cat left, just like last time. The last one got really big, and I guess he finally wandered off to pupate. But he sure didnt move much. So I will watch the one ittbitty. I did get some really huge PVSTs. I have never seen one! I really hope they pupate alright. And after being so sad over not getting any BSTs on my very lush fennel, I ordered some along with this order, and presto! new hatched cats! Oh and GF when just hatched look like short little yellow strings. Then they get red. I watch them munching out my kitchen window.The funny thing also is my mom thought I was insane when I started getting into this, so that my then 5 yo son could see the lifecycle, after awhile, and taking her to Shady oaks for the tour, she absolutley loves it too now. fighting8r, Yes, the Giant Swallowtails definitely are wonderful and so enjoyable to raise. Congratulations on your first eclosure in awhile! Mary, Some might come out this year yet, but I suspect that most of mine will overwinter. I honestly don't know if it would matter or not if you keep them inside or outside, but I keep mine outside from about this time of the year until they come out next year for the reason that you mentioned, so they sense the changing temps and don't come out too early when they shouldn't. Maybe they'd be okay this year yet, but I'd really rather that they wait until next year to eclose if possible. I'd probably raise those two tiny ones inside though until they pupate and then also put them outside. If they're inside in the warm, I think that speeds their growing process...unless you really want them to join you for Christmas. ;-) Cathy

Removed nest and five eggs today

Boy,am I relieved.This morning at 6:15,I saw Daddy at the box,thought he just might be feeding Mom.I didn't want to check that early in case Mom might be laying another egg.Just now when I came home,I decided to check the box.Dad was in a nearby tree and when I opened the box,there was Mom sitting there all crouched down,nice and cozy.she never even moved.Needless to say,I closed the box quickly and left her alone.I was very relieved and excited.I have no idea if there are more than 3 eggs or not,just happy they are ok.Also on the way back to the house,I walked by a box that has been mounted on the side of the garage for a few years and has always gone unoccupied.My husband mentioned the other day that he saw a bird sticking his head out ,but was unsure what it was.As I walked by,I gently tapped and out came a white breasted nuthatch.How exciting,that is a first for me.Very cool.This box is difficult to open,so I will just have to leave it alone and enjoy.Glad to share some good news.....Jane

my husband used just a metal post from Lowes or Home Depot.I like my boxes at eye level so that I can monitor them easily.If you go to Bet's Sialis website I am sure you will get all the answers you need.

Remember, raccoons are nocturnal. Unless you stay up all night and watch, you will never know. And they reside in urban, suburban, and city environments. They love to eat eggs and little birds, even adult birds if they can catch them (like reaching into a nestbox). And believe me, there is nothing worse than going out to check on the nest, and finding a wing here, a leg over there, and feathers everywhere, especially knowing you could have prevented it. And if a raccoon can get them, so can cats.
You CAN move the nestbox, carefully, to a safer setup. I have not had to do that, as my setup is already the best I can make it, but others have. Hopefully they will chime in.
