Eggs Question

I'm writing for my girlfriend who lives in Marshfield, WI. She had a nest with four eggs. She checked about the time they should have hatched, and there was some "feathers" in the nest, so she knew the eggs were hatching. She did not check again until yesterday (to see if they had fledged), and she discovered three eggs in the nest. Do you think they are eggs that did not hatch, OR are they 3 NEW eggs from a 2nd brood? She said the mama and papa are still going in and out of the box and seem to be happy.

Since she didn't check after the initial check, she is unsure of what she should do. I told her that bluebirds don't usually use an "old" nest, but I don't know what kind of advice to give her.

So, I am asking for her ... what is your suggestion of what she should do?

FYI~ My bluebird babies are 8 days old now and doing very well. :)
