Your voice when the bat flew ... Thank you for the chuckle, NewEnglandgardening!

LindaC -- extremely irresponsible "advice". I use that term loosely. An entire family recently went through a series of rabies shots after an encounter with a bat in the house as a precaution.

Allegheny County

"Anyone finding a bat in his or her home is encouraged to report it immediately to the Allegheny County Health Department at 412-687-2243.

"When a bat is found, wear a pair of heavy-duty rubber gloves and place a container such as a large bowl or empty coffee can over it, slide a piece of cardboard underneath to trap the bat inside, cover the container with a lid or cap, and then submit the bat to the health department for testing," the department's website states.

"It's especially important to report bats found in areas where people sleep, even when you're not sure whether you've been bitten and exposed to their saliva, because bat bites can be so tiny they may leave no marks visible to the naked eye and so painless they may not even be felt by someone while sleeping," the website states.

Wishing you a quiet dropped ceiling, NewEnglandgardening!

hey I was looking for info on cameras to monitor your animals so I can see if I can can get mines working and for the last hour or so been watching everyone's cams. LOL entertaining. Anyway I found a video taken inside a bat house. It looks like it might be the last one to leave and there is only one bat on this cam but I thought you might like to see it. BTW it was definitely velvet. I remember now cause she told me about her setup when she had the chickcam up last year. Here is a link that might be useful: batcam

hey kristy, thanks for the advice. actually, there's kind of only one spot on our house where i can hang it, where it's flat with no obstructions-- but-- 30 feet up?? wow, that's pretty tall!!-- the tallest point on our house is maybe 15!, and it doesn't get morning sun, and it gets less than 6 hrs of it. but it's so darn hot here for about 10 months out of the year, i wonder if it will work anyway? also, about the soap- a guy who worked at the wild birds unlimited store where i got the bat house told me to do that, so- i hope he's not giving out wrong information to all the customers. i was wondering about that, b/c i know bats have a very refined sense of smell. i can get some guano at the garden store, but thank you for the offer ;)! OK, i just found this link to a video that describes all about how to build a bat house, how to put it up, plus the site has links for where to buy, etc... http://www.batcatalog.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idProduct=193
