Got a better picture this morning. Hope this means the male is around somewhere and I'll see him at my feeder.

Thanks! I tried to sneak back and take a photo when the sun was out for about 20 minutes but the oriole stayed away. Meanwhile, it went back to raining again. It's been mostly raining off and on-mostly on- a slow drizzle for weeks now. Meanwhile, the leaves are opening and I can see my hopes for more warbler photos in a sunny woods fading. But last year, when the weather stayed fair during spring migration, KY suffered a severe drought that lasted until this current rain, so I should be grateful for it. Now they're putting out flood warnings.

Is this a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak?

Hmmm, I hate to say that I don't think so. A Rose-breasted Grosbeak has a stouter and paler bill; as thick as this bird's bill is, it just isn't convincing for a RBGR. A female RBGR has a very bold head pattern (but not a dark malar stripe, as this bird has) and also has white wing bars (this bird does not). This bird is pretty rufous in color; too much so for a RBGR. With all of that said, along with that long straight tail, I cannot rule out Song Sparrow here.

Awesome Chickens!!! Have only seen this in pics and on TV. We do have a small population of Lesser Prairie Chickens here in Michigan and I was where they live but didn't see any when I WAS THERE OOPS. I just love all grouse. Cathy

This has been my best bird day, ever! Not long after posting this, several Northern Orioles flew in too. "The Gang's All Here!" and they're certainly making my feeder tree and post very colorful. Linda OHnowGA ~ Do you use the "upside down" finch/nyjer feeder? It restricts the seed so only the goldfinches can get to it? That has helped keep some of my costs down. Of course, the Pine Warblers here can eat upside down, too, so they "share." And the doves are always on the ground to pick up the leftovers. Ont Gal ~ There has been a rumor that there have been nesting cardinals in Grand Forks for the past two-three years. I haven't seen them yet, but I keep hoping. Lynn D ~ I've never seen an Indigo Bunting "in person," but I certainly hope to. They have got to be magical. RTHummer ~ f you send me a pair of cardinals, I'll send you a pair of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks! How's that for a deal? Bird on, ladies; Bird on!!!

She is indeed beautiful, and well photographed. I saw a male today, only the second time ever, and I've never seen a female.

It is interesting how many different markings/colorations grosbeaks have. Not only are the black/white patterns completely different on every bird, but so are the rosy breast colors. We had one this weekend whose breast pattern bled down in a straight line into his belly. Another male had the white striped head found on the female. Normally, I'd assume juveniles, but these were definitely adults.

Congrats on those photos! Claire, I'm thinking the male looks a bit juvenile still...he's got brown spots on his top back.

The mature one we had at our feeder didn't have any speckling like that on his black part. The underbelly didn't have any speckling either.

I found this cool link when I was searching out the bird...it shows juvenile & mature descriptions with pics.

Nice link, mary4b, thanks! He could well be a juvenile. Here's a pic of the only other grosbeak I've ever seen, from 2011. This guy is more likely an adult.

I hope he stays around, but I suspect he's just passing through since I've only seen them in May.
