I'm playing with my new camera. This is mama in the apple tree. Had some backlighting going on - didn't know what to do though I know there is SOMETHING to do.

my husband gave me a combo birthday mothers's day present. It's a Nikon D80. I will NEVER be able to use it to its full capabilities because it is smarter than I am!! I may have to take a course one of these days. I ll add it to the list of things I mean to do.

(Now that I see them next to my cherries, though, I am starting to have a sinking feeling that I am growing 2 big beautiful weeds in my garden!! :) Any pictures that you may have would be a HUGE help!!) Lisa, what are the differences between your cherry tomato plants and your Golden Mama plants? Look carefully at your cherry tomato foliage and blossoms and if the foliage and blossoms of those two Golden Mama plants isn't similar then you might conclude that you are growing weeds. Sigh. All tomato plants have about the same characteristics with just some different leaf forms and growth habits but the blossom structures are about the same and that's what you should also look for. So your Golden Mama plants should look very similar to your cherry tomato plants. Carolyn

I've never been through this with an animal, but I had it myself after my first child. I don't imagine it behaves very differently for animals. It's a very painful condition, so she is a very good mom to continue caring for her babies through all that. What happened with mine, was that the dr. drained off as much pus as possible with a needle, but most of it was too deep to reach. Then he put me on antibiotics and over the next few days, everything gradually came to the surface. The pain lessened and the area remained soft. As long as it remains soft, you'll know the inflammation is going down. I had small amounts of blood that seeped out and after several days, it began to seriously drain on its own. I helped it along with warm, wet compresses until it was all out. I think mastitis usually happens because of cracked skin from sore nipples allowing bacteria to enter. Once the nipples harden from nursing, the skin stops cracking. For this reason, I don't think she'll have any future problems once this drains and she finishes her antibiotic, but like I said, just watch that the area remains soft and doesn't get more red and inflamed. Hot compresses could speed things along, too. It's awfully kind of you to take the kitties in. Best of luck with them.

@homepro01 -- Good to know about Linoto. They are local for me. I've used Cuddledown's down pillows and duvet for more than 20 years and could not ask for better IMO. I've been to their store in Maine and like that they are U.S. made. My interest in their sheets is mainly the linen sheets, which look lovely (though Italian-made which I'm told by an industry source is tops in terms of quality). I did sent a wedding gift of their sheets to a cousin and she was thrilled. Sorry about your Batiste sheets. No idea. But if you're looking for batiste you might checkPerfect Linens. I believe they have some and I've been very impressed by a set of their embroidered sateen sheets, and I'm a percale person.

Two years ago I left some scapes up on Gingko Craig. The pods split open during the winter and last spring, voila! I had my first seedlings! Cute little greenies....bigger this year. Nichols, if you want babies you have to allow the flowers to dry on the stalks...which form pods (if fertile)...pods ripen and burst open, releasing the black winged seeds. You can harvest them or let them drop to the ground. Some seedlings will follow. :)

Nice pictures Anita. I think Harold has a D80 also.

If it were me, I would lighten them just a tad, especially the first one where her face is heavily shadowed.

Like so, if you will excuse my messing with your image. You can do this very quickly with most editing programs.

Hi Dave, ya but don't you think it washes out her body a bit? Do you know how to use the backlight feature? I find the manual to be pretty useless. :)

Hi Anita, and congratulations on your new camera!

I've read the DPreview of the D80 and it got a "Highly Recommended" rating. Nice camera for sure. Did you get any long or zoom lenses with it?

I think these photos look quite good... Sharp focus, with probably better detail than we can see at the size you've posted them here. But you're right, the backlighting from the sky is rather distracting, and while the bird is pretty well exposed where the light falls on her, there are some hard shadows too. I agree with Dave that this detracts especially from that first shot (which is the best pose imo).

As to what to do about it? Well I sure don't know what settings on the D80 might have made these better captures. Lacking a fill flash, I would resort to post-processing too.

Best advice might be: Have a lot of fun, and try to gradually learn about your excellent camera's features by taking LOTS of pictures. You may be as smart as it is one day soon.
