Flycatcher babies peeking at the world!

Today is a strange day - we're enjoying seeing our baby Great Crested Flycatchers taking their first good look at the world, while at the same time we're feeling sooo worried about our missing Blues (different post).

BUT -- this is about our babies - we thought we'd share a few pics of our babes peeking out and being fed by Mama/Papa.

We're hoping to get more - (clearer) pics, especially of them fledging - but we know we'll have to be quick!!!

Lucky you....I've never had the pleasure of having these cuties in my yard...thanks for sharing and hope you get to see them fledge..

Great pics. Wish they'd nest here. I did see an adult flycatcher in my neighbor's pine tree this morning. It was flying from limb to limb I think it was gleaming insects from the needles. I had to use my binocs because the tree is about 90' tall.

Ok..I could of sworn I answered questions yesterday and posted! Where in teh world is it?lol Jodik, thank you so much for that! My goodness, now I can't remember what I said, but it was good..lol I know that the only success I have evr had with roses was a welcome back from winter with dead branches or once I cut them off, to see the trunks hollow! Is this some kind of borer, or from cold? Will it affect self rooted ones. In the citrus world, own roots do horrible in the soil with nemetodes and teh such, and that is why they use grafted ones. I always thought the same applied to roses? I am just grateful I can have a mentor such as you to finally be successful with mine here at home:-) Jojo...My cat is very well behaved, but what I do when I am not there is another story..lol I know he is not even interested in my plants, that is except if I do not feed him first thing in the a.m Believe me, it is only then that he has a way of letting me know that he shoukld eat before I do. But I must admit, I have to keep all palms and spider plants away from him. I never saw a tea rose before? Just what are they? Do they have that distinct very 'sweet strong' fragrance? That is what I would love to smell. Chris..You are too funny.lol Jodik, beautiful pics by the way! I'll bet you look so forward to the solsticand the return of the sun! I am sure counting the days...:-) Purple, great points made! I am not even sure if anyone sells them here. But all I need is Jodik to hook me up:-) By the way, the plants in my room are starting to flower like crazy! They love the cooler temps, breeze, humidity, and lack of bugs! My sister just dropped off three citrus trees, and two jasmine about 3 feet high because she couldn't care for them. Oh, what to do? Cut them way back, spray, and then store them in that room? Or cut them back, and store them in my cellar close to lights and let them rest? Arg! Mike

Hi everyone and thank you! Sorry to just respond now. I still had to keep my job...lol! Pax...It's not that hard to post pics once I have my photbucket open. It's the choosing of which pics from the stored pics (gosh I don't know how many they are) in the camera that takes time. This Baby Doll was planted waaaayyyy to late in the season for Hadeco bulbs. That is the reason for the short scapes. The second scape it produced was 2" taller than the scape pictured above. It will definitely improve next season. I have right now other Hadeco bulbs, also planted late in the season, that are having a very hard time giving out any kind of growth, scapes or leaves. Poor Vesuvius produced a 2" scape followed by a 3"second scape and the third scape is now 4"tall...lol! I really do recomend planting Hadeco bulbs by December, the latest. Jodik...Isn't our 'mislabeled Rilona' a beauty? Funny how we end up with the same bulb instead of a Rilona. This could possibly be the growers fault. I can't remember if this bulb came with a growers tag. But the Clown that I bought from the same store had a Langeveld tag. Did yours had this tag? I have a very strong feeling that this is Trendsetter. My Trensetter did not bloom. :-( Soultan, did your Trendsetter flower yet?

We've been trying to get some pics of our little ones but it's proved to be quite difficult. They hide way down in the nest keeping super still under all those feathers. We managed to get a couple - here's the latest @ 10 days old....(these pics aren't the greatest) As you can see --- it's a mass of feathers (the ones Mama put in there and the babies') ... it's hard to tell which end is which... but you can just make out an eye peeking just left of the egg. We had thought Mama had either removed the 3rd egg or it had dropped down inside the nest --but it 'reappeared' the other day so I guess they had been lying on it. Mama and Papa have been ultra busy feeding.... Papa seems to have some trouble getting inside the box and tends to stick his head in the opening hoping the little ones will take what he has - which wasn't happening being as they were so young and all....seems like he's having more success now. Mama just dives right in there. Here's Mama with supper.... (bit fuzzy - sorry) We think it's a flying grasshopper -- HUGE!! Well-- we have decided not to look inside the box anymore as it's getting close to fledging. We're hoping to start seeing little beaks appearing at the hole soon to take what's being offered. Hopefully we can get some decent pics then! As for our Blues.... they have 4 eggs and we're on day 9 of incubation... : )

Georgeanne..your great barn got me to play and search for pics of old garden structures. I'm still in inside chaos trying to finish things and trying to maintain focus, but love my garden/outdoors so it is difficult not to go there. My shed is still in the process of being finished, it has log sheathes for the outside, these are the strips with bark from cutting logs into lumber. In hindsight (as much as I love the look) I just reroofed my home and now have a monster pile of wood shingles which could have been used for siding the shed. Next idea is to use these for siding a half shed (self standing porch) where I can sit in the shade among the trees and kick back. I like rustic and have a long way to go getting the backyard in shape. Have always wanted to build an arbor with branches, fell upon a website out of Canada named HomeEnvy. This may be in the wrong thread or forum. But it has a lot of interesting diy and many fit well in working within our small house environment. The URL is instructions for building an arbor. Our pair of flycatchers fledged today. Typically I was at work and missed it.... they couldn't wait til my lunch break I guess! Hubby tried to get pics and got a few of them peeking out he says but reached down to get his glasses and - poof - they were gone! I didn't get the whole story yet so there may be more to follow - including pics if there are any clearer shots of them peeking out.

So... it turns out hubby was in the middle of trying to make something to eat when he noticed action at the box, a lot of commotion from Mama and Papa trying to coax them out of the box. He spent 30 mins running back and forth between living room and kitchen windows and his food.

The camera was set up on a tripod at the window and he got a couple of pics of heads peeking out. After a while he remembered the video option so started filming. (We would put a link to the video but 1. you can barely see the bird and 2. there's a little cursing as he realizes he can't see and doesn't have his glasses!!!)

Hubby felt sure he'd missed it leave but after watching the video was surprised to find that as he went for his glasses the first bird flew out so he did capture it afterall - if you blink you miss it! Unfortunately he had set the video for the second bird... had his finger poised over the record button, turned to pick his glasses up off the table - turned back to the record button and ... woosh - there it was flying off before he could press, but he did see it fly safely to the trees.

(I think a nest cam is definitely on this year's list for Santa!!)

Of course, they have chosen a miserable rainy day to fledge, what a welcome to the world!!

Kathy, if you're reading this, he saw a flycatcher go into the nest in the satellite twice a couple of hours apart so maybe there is something going on there too. If that's the case they should be fledging shortly also.
