Flycatcher babies peeking at the world!

Today is a strange day - we're enjoying seeing our baby Great Crested Flycatchers taking their first good look at the world, while at the same time we're feeling sooo worried about our missing Blues (different post).

BUT -- this is about our babies - we thought we'd share a few pics of our babes peeking out and being fed by Mama/Papa.

We're hoping to get more - (clearer) pics, especially of them fledging - but we know we'll have to be quick!!!

Lucky you....I've never had the pleasure of having these cuties in my yard...thanks for sharing and hope you get to see them fledge..

Great pics. Wish they'd nest here. I did see an adult flycatcher in my neighbor's pine tree this morning. It was flying from limb to limb I think it was gleaming insects from the needles. I had to use my binocs because the tree is about 90' tall.

I spy with my little eye.......... Mama has been a very sneaky girl - trying to confuse us with a second nest (and doing a good job I might say!) We left the box alone for a few days - no peeking inside as we didn't want to risk spooking them just in case they were still planning on using it. This morning Hubby was outside 'talking' to the birds....when he spied Mama on the fence. He backed away into the house at which point we crawled (literally) to a window close by and slowly eased open the blind. Mama edged cautiously towards the nest and hopped in. I proceeded to stand guard and watched for 25 mins. Just as I was beginning to feel stupid...(i.e. thinks to self "why am I watching an empty box, she obviously flew out while I glanced away....") who should pop her head out and then fly to the tree! Needless to say we were excited -- we could only imagine her doing 1 or 2 things for 25 mins in there. ANYHOO ---- we waited til this evening to take a peek. It's very difficult to get the camera in for a good shot as the nest is so high and add to that it has been so windy we didn't want to open the box too far and have the wind disturb the nest. We could see one egg very clearly but think there may be three. It's very hard to see on the pic but you should be able to make out at least one AND of course, the snake skin.... she's got quite a bit of it in there. The pic below is just of one side of the nest from directly facing the front....lots of feathers, plastic, and snake skin you can just make out at the back...and by the animal hair which has been moved around.... We're sooooooo excited. Hopefully when this wind dies down we can try again... maybe tomorrow evening. We don't want to check too often but will keep this updated for those interested. Back to our Blues, it seems they're starting to drop the odd pine needled in a different box so fingers crossed. We're having fun watching the babies learn to fend for themselves right now!! Watched one of the 'boys' find himself a nice looking bug yesterday only to have Dad jump in a steal it from him.... awwww~~~

Your children are beautiful. I've been following your posts as of late and have tried to sit on my fingers, but can't any longer. Stacy, it's really not a great idea to post pictures of your kids and posts that contain your last name (saw it in another thread), along with the story of your brother, who you have accused of sexual/possible sexual abuse. It's a very small world and all this info you are sharing scares me...for you and your family. I had already thanked Margo for her Cincinnati package but wanted to share a pic. Just love all of it! Peanuts are already gone. The Chili - it will be next! The cardinal bird handed I already know where on my patio it is going. Carnation seed is gonna be planted ( it’s my favorite!) I could be biased there as 32 yrs ago this Dec. that was the first flower my husband gave me on our first date. The currant tomato seed I love to can so those will be of use too. She also sent a cute buckeye keychain. And in the background is a veggie tote bag. I always use these when going to the store. Wow, so glad you were my partner Margo. You really brightened my world today especially when all I can do is try to rest and pray the pain will ease up. Will be having surgery Wednesday. Margo - Jay mailed your box a few days ago and he said you should have gotten it yesterday. Hope you enjoy the state theme I picked. i am in the cold side of z5 MI ... when i moved from suburbia to the prairie ... i had 1675 pots ... frozen about half were stored outside the pole barn.. stacked on their sides.. piled on top of each other ... media facing out ... why stain the barn.. eh ... and rest were inside the polebarn .. piled one on top of another to about 6 feet ... i lost none do to any of that ... the biggest problem.. come early march.. with a late may last frost date.. is the ones INSIDE THE BARN .... started coming out of dormancy early due to accumulated heat ... and then i had actively growing potted hosta... that needed to be unstacked.. and moved outside the barn .. and with repeated thaws and freezes .. and spring rain on frozen pots.. i ended up losing a lot of hosta ... i must have blocked that memory.. but it was around 500 or so .... i see no reason.. why in your zone 6... you need insulation .... i think you made it a lot harder than need be ... i see no reason this needs to be fixed now ... come spring.. you can remove the gelatinous goo of rotted leaves ... and then.. AND ONLY THEN ... might i consider treating the media ... you have taken a plant.. hosta.. that are able to live down to z3 i believe... and in z6 are babying the heck out of them.. perhaps creating more trouble than it was worth ... i would leave the top off.. and simply forget about them.. until the spring rains start.. and then perhaps... cover them.. IF THE POTS are frozen ... and in the spring.. whatever ones are having a hard time... well ... wait for it.. throw them on the driveway .. and run them over a few times ... it will either cure them.. of put them out of your misery ... ken ps: are mold and mildew even really a soil issue in the frozen north???.. who cares whats on dead leaves ... it a whole other world.. for these warm zone peeps in CA and TX ....

Our pair of flycatchers fledged today. Typically I was at work and missed it.... they couldn't wait til my lunch break I guess! Hubby tried to get pics and got a few of them peeking out he says but reached down to get his glasses and - poof - they were gone! I didn't get the whole story yet so there may be more to follow - including pics if there are any clearer shots of them peeking out.

So... it turns out hubby was in the middle of trying to make something to eat when he noticed action at the box, a lot of commotion from Mama and Papa trying to coax them out of the box. He spent 30 mins running back and forth between living room and kitchen windows and his food.

The camera was set up on a tripod at the window and he got a couple of pics of heads peeking out. After a while he remembered the video option so started filming. (We would put a link to the video but 1. you can barely see the bird and 2. there's a little cursing as he realizes he can't see and doesn't have his glasses!!!)

Hubby felt sure he'd missed it leave but after watching the video was surprised to find that as he went for his glasses the first bird flew out so he did capture it afterall - if you blink you miss it! Unfortunately he had set the video for the second bird... had his finger poised over the record button, turned to pick his glasses up off the table - turned back to the record button and ... woosh - there it was flying off before he could press, but he did see it fly safely to the trees.

(I think a nest cam is definitely on this year's list for Santa!!)

Of course, they have chosen a miserable rainy day to fledge, what a welcome to the world!!

Kathy, if you're reading this, he saw a flycatcher go into the nest in the satellite twice a couple of hours apart so maybe there is something going on there too. If that's the case they should be fledging shortly also.
