Black Capped Chickadees feeding young video

Here are a pair of Black Capped Chickadees feeding their young. It seems they are able to find a caterpillar less than 5 minutes apart

I'm picturing some very voracious babies in there. At one point in the video an adult chickadee sticks its head out, and it almost looks like it was pulled back inside by the youngsters. Best to get dinner in there fast!

Nice video of such sweet little birds. HOWEVER they are in serious danger! I hear House Sparrows in the background, they will kill the babies & the Mom if they get in the box. You could put a 1&1/8 hole reducer on the entrance and put up a Sparrow Spooker. Instructions and tons more info can be found here. www.sialis.org Good Luck!

Mike, Thanks, but they're not all thriving...I've been doing this for a while, and most of my plants are easy to grow. No, I don't have lots of room, but I have enough for now. That could change when I get more plants - it is Christmas, after all. Hi Sharon, Thank you; it's just experience, and trying to not overwater them. Porous mix, eye of newt and toe of frog, wool of bat and tongue of dog Penny, As long as you're keeping them on the dry side (only spritzing, you shouldn't be). Paul, Thanks - me too. Glen, I think it's also called that - I don't really follow the names as well as some folks here do. That is what it's called in Germany, sort of, at least 'Crassula obliqua solana Lemon' n Lime'. Sounds like nomenclutter to me but it's important to know what one's talking about, right, otherwise my dislike of common names means nothing. Josh, I was disappointed in realizing I should have repotted a year ago. The local moose water must agree with it. CG, I'm afraid you'll have to get in line for this one - you're currently about #17, so it will be a while. I'd normally be happy to share, but I can't with this plant yet.

Well, so far Lexa there are little - no signs of HOSP using my boxes. So no Van Ert Trapping. For the first time in at least 2 years - my bluebirds have staked a first claim from one of my box pairs. There are now a few pieces of grass formed into a circle in one of my boxes. The male and female bluebird were hanging around behind the box, so I'm thinking it has to be them. Plus I haven't seen any HOSP on/near my boxes yet. Unfortunately, today I trapped yet another Chickadee. 4th one. My brother put some bait in there I didn't want him too, so this is probably what got the chickadee. The little guy was going back and forth. Approaching I saw it but couldn't tell what it was. Was thinking "come on, HOSP please" nope, another Chickadee. Although frantic, he had no damage and appeared healthy. It took him a minute to find the exit. Little guy bursted out and the next minutes he was up in the tree calling away. I'm not giving up yet! I've brought bread crumbs to the equation. I should have one eventually. Indeed with the "rogue" sparrow Lexa! I am gonna convince my neighbor to get a universal trap for his Martin Trio house, as removing the HOSP last season caused European Starlings to move in and start nesting. The Spar-o-door traps are too small for Starlings. I'm just glad my overall efforts to get rid of the HOSP have been successful. I've really changed things around here.

I definitely would not try anything once the eggs are in the nest but I'm just itching to get that focus right. I adjusted for what I thought would be the bottom of the nest material and did not think about a little higher to account for the birds height. Maybe the babies will at least be in focus initially until they grow. They looks like the first layer is a certain type of moss.

My observation is that in the egg-laying phase, the female roosts in the box to lay an egg in the early morning, then she leaves the box for the day. This is what the 'book' also says. However, there is a difference between what the 'book' says and what I have observed this year as to the start of incubation. The 'book' says that she starts incubating, i.e. she stays in the box for the day with short interruptions (and roosts in the box at night) when she has laid her penultimate egg. In other words, the 'book' says that she will lay another egg the next morning after she stays in the box for the first incubation day. What I have observed this year is that she did not lay another egg after she stayed in the box for the first incubation day. (She is incubating 7 eggs now) As to fur blankets, what I have observed are fur blankets of up to perhaps half an inch thick. Last year bird was somewhat diligent in covering the eggs when she left the box. This year bird mostly leaves the eggs uncovered when she leaves the box. This different nesting behavior is perhaps another indication that it is not the same bird that nests in the box.

I've read about how vicious sparrows can be. I hate sparrows. They can empty out my bird feeder in a couple of hours. Throwing most of it to the ground. The neighbors have a lot of opening on their houses that the sparrows are nesting in. When the holes get bigger the starling then get in and drop crap all over my car. A sparrow worked to make the opening bigger this winter with out success. The chickadees must keep a low profile early on. That evening, just before sunset, one of the babies was hangin on the outside of the hole and then flew down to the ground and hide in the bee balm. The next morning it was on the grapevine. The next evening another one left around the same time. Must be a plan to leave then. They are now in some evergreen trees. I've heard the parents warning them when there are bluejays around. Today I saw one of the adult chickadee chasing a sparrow.
