I'm gonna feed Hummingbirds for the first time this year. Is the Rubythroated all we get here in Tennessee in the Spring?

Mostly.

There have been eBird reports of rare sightings of Rufous and Calliope but that is info I pulled from the internet and is in no way exhaustive. I can safely tell you, however, that the Ruby-throated is the only one whose normal range includes TN (this is true of most eastern states).

Tennessee is beautiful. Lived there for about three years a while back.

You will be entertained and enthralled!! I believe they have already made it to your state. You can check their progress north at www.hummingbirds.net. There is a migration map on the site and other good information - I will be waiting a while to see the first arrivals here. You can also check on the hummingbird forum right here at Garden Web - lots of good tips there too.

I am receiving lots of "cannot send to this email address" so please make sure you either forward an address where you can be reached or update your settings in GW. Unfortunately, I don't have time to track individuals down to make sure you are receiving the messages I'm sending. :) Julie, there seems to be a problem with GW and email addresses when you get the folloow-up replies emailed to you. When you hit 'reply' it should show the GW email addy, but often it is also showing the member name behind the address, and then that causes the email to show as 'rejected'. I know you will get this reply, so if you try and then 'reply' to that email, please note what is in the TO line before hitting send. If you then delete off 'the extra' stuff behind the email addy, it should send just fine. Clear as mud? I'm just being a busy body here and not wanting to take you up on your kind offer. that would depend on where the nest is. if in the ground she'd have a good chance for survival & might stay put. if in an open nest or say an abandoned bird house she'd need to seek a warmer location. if you can locate the nest destroy it after spraying them or when they've gone dormant. if in the ground get a gallon of a good pesticide & mix it in a bucket with some liquid dish soap & pour it into the hole with a funnel. do this after they've gone dormant or if you have a problem nest during the warmer weather pour the mix in at night. wear long pants & sleeves, a hat, gloves, & cover your face with a bandana. pour it quickly & run like h**l. I know some will poo-poo this but gasoline or diesel fuel in a ground nest works too. if you're not up to it call a pro. yellow jackets & hornets can be quite aggressive . anyone in the St Louis area can contact me for swarm captures & bee removals from buildings & trees. this would be for honeybees only. 99.999 % of the calls I get after mid august are usually yellow jackets.

Hummingbirds? or Hummingbird Moths?

We've had those moths here for years and we enjoy watching them. They're not as friendly as the hummers but never have caused any problems. The hummingbirds are usually here in spring when the flowering crabs bloom, then they're gone and return at hosta blooming time. I had to leave the feeders out for them for a couple weeks and one would stop a couple times and move on, but now they've really started frequenting them heavily. Like you, I also had just wasps and butterflies sitting on them. Now the syrup goes down visibly every day. They must be hungry little devils too because they're even trying to get nectar out of the little clear bulbs on the lights on the bushes around my deck and they buzz around my head checking me out. This is the first time I've had enough of them around me that aren't shy and they sit in the branches of my curly willow and chirp, and they sit long enough I can get a good look at them and see some of them are browner in color, and some have bright metallic green backs. Friendly little things.

I am sure I have posted this too many times, but I had great success with rhododendrons by scraping the bottom of branches near the ground, pegging them down and covering the scraped part with soil, leaving the end leaves showing. A year later, the new plant could be severed with a shovel from the parent. A mat of roots had grown where I had scraped the stem.

Lucky you!!!! We are still getting snow showers off and on around here although no snow on the ground like a lot of other unlucky folks. Get your feeders out and enjoy the show!

I put up about 6 little feeder on April 1 each year.. and right now have 8 feeders up and lots and lots of lil hummers just buzzing around all of them... I am in Perry County TN.

If you have hummers and want to see them close up, put a suction cup feeder on your window. I sit within 3 ft of them and it's wonderful to see

It's also fun to plant hummer plants & see them feed more naturally. I also use feeders but somehow seeing them on flowers is different. There is plenty of info online re: plants to attract hummers. I'm in East Tennessee & have not seen one yet but they are in the area. Love the suction cup feeders but they don't last long for me.

I live in West TN and have Ruby Throats pretty much April through October. I get more in July as they head southward. You will pretty much only see Ruby Throats. I have seen one Black Chinned Male and it was a thrill!

Sugar water with no red dye; go to WallyMart and get the round based feeders (I think they are $4) and hang them all over your yard. At this time of year, I have only one feeder and it's in front of my office window. They've tapped on my window in the past to let me know it was time for new food.

At the height of the season, I have 10 or more feeders out. I can stand right next to a feeder and they just buzz around. If I hold my hands around the feeder, they'll land and feed.

I haven't seen a Hummingbird in a week. Are they nesting maybe?

I've seen them all day but I don't get too many this time of year. Keep in mind the weather patterns have been strange. They basically pass through here on their way north.
